Responsibilities:

The Y12 National Security Complex, simply known as Y12, has three primary national security missions that protect our country and our allies around the world. Maintaining the US nuclear weapons stockpile, reducing global threats, and fueling the US Navy’s nuclear propulsion program are the key activities at this historic site.

As the Waste Package Certifier (WPC) supporting Y12, you’ll certify waste packages have been prepared, filled, closed and secured per Y12 procedures, regulatory requirements, Department of Energy (DOE) requirements, and disposal facility acceptance criteria. Other duties include:

• Support the Y12 Waste Certification Manager/Official (WCO) and Alternate WCOs as needed.
• Responsible for ensuring waste placed in Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved packages comply with Y12 waste management procedures, DOE orders, regulatory (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, applicable Codes of Federal Regulations, DOT) requirements and disposal facility acceptance criteria.
• Identifies prohibited items and segregate from acceptable items.
• Ensures waste has been properly characterized, profiled and prepared, prior to packaging.
• Complete appropriate paperwork to document package certification.
• Responsible for interfacing with waste generators, waste engineers, and alternate waste certification officials to ensure all facets of waste packaging are addressed.

Qualifications:

• An associate's degree in a related discipline and a minimum 2 years of relevant experience…OR a high school diploma with 5 or more years of relevant experience.
• Must pass a drug screening test.
• Must be able to work outside during all seasons and work overtime as required.
• Requires a DOE Q security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, polychlorinated biphenyls, Toxic Substances Control Act, asbestos, Department of Transportation regulations and DOE orders to the management of hazardous and radiological waste.
• Experience verifying appropriate packaging for waste destined for the Environmental and Waste Management Facility (EMWMF) or participating in a waste certification program is preferred.
• Y12 experience preferred.
• Active security clearance issued by the US; a DOE Q level is preferred.
• Production experience preferred.

Location/Work Arrangement:

• This position is full-time (40-hour work week)
• Wearing of respiratory protection will be required on occasion.
• Onsite position at the Y12 facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
