POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Nurse Administrator, CVMC nurses provide direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process, performs technical nursing functions and upholds the standard of practice of a professional nurse in caring for adolescent through geriatric patients on the medical/surgical units. Must comply with departmental policies regarding attendance and periodic evaluations in order to perform the job duties acceptably.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Utilizes the nursing process as the basis for nursing care.
- Provides direct patient care.
- Performs nursing functions, applying professional skills.
- Maintain appropriate crisis intervention skills.
- Carefully administers medications and intravenous solutions as ordered by the physician.
- Communicates and acts as liaison between the patient, family, and physician with respect for confidentiality and dignity.
- Documents patient treatments, response, and progress notes.
- Performs nursing procedures safely and efficiently, according to established policy manual.
- Demonstrates understanding and adherence to hospital’s infection control protocols.
- Participates in mandatory in-services regarding CPR, Infection Control, Fire Safety, and OSHA.
- Attends additional continuing education seminars and conferences to remain current with ACLS, CPR, NALS, BLS, and PALS certification.
- Maintains good rapport and displays cooperative relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, ancillary departments, and visitors.
- Arranges to have needed supplies and equipment on hand.
- Responds promptly and professionally to emergent situations.
- Respects patient confidentiality in administration, employee, and patient issues by adhering to HIPAA guidelines and demonstrates professional conduct.
- Participates in mandatory in-services regarding Infection Control, Fire Safety, and OSHA.
- Understands and adheres to established compliance, safety, and quality assurance standards.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

COMPETENCY: Clinical competency is demonstrated through the optimal implementation and evaluation of therapeutic processes.
- Demonstrates knowledge of patient conditions encountered and understands the physiological basis for the nursing care delivered.
- Demonstrates knowledge of medications, IV and tube feeding solutions including purpose, side effects and contra-indications and administers them according to written standards.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of BSI and infection control and actively uses and oversees aseptic technique.
- Demonstrates competence in assembly, use and care of equipment.
- Carries out all treatments and procedures in accordance with established medical center policy.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION & ABILITIES:
Certification, Registration, or Licensure: Current Utah R.N. license, current CPR, ACLS, NALS and PALS certification.
Minimum Education: Graduate of accredited School of Nursing.
Minimum Experience: Minimum of two years clinical or hospital experience preferred.
Other:
- Clinical experience requirements are dependent upon specific position.
- Required to be flexible in scheduling, i.e. days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Demonstrates organizational skills and leadership ability.
- Demonstrates the ability to understand the unique infant child, adolescent, adult and geriatric population and effectively meet the needs relative to growth, assessment and development of the patients.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- PHYSICAL: Must be able to walk and stand for long periods, write legibly and use a computer terminal. Must be able to hear and talk over the telephone and in person with others, must be able to use hands to finger, handle and feel. Must be able to move up to 100 lbs. Must have good vision with the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Must be able to kneel, stoop or crouch.
- MENTAL: Must be flexible in a demanding environment. Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Must be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. Must be calm during times of crisis.
IMPACT:
This position has a high impact on the quality of patient care at Central Valley Medical Center. Poor work performance could result in a negative outcome for a patient’s return to a state of wellness.
