About This Position
A Medical-Surgical (Med/Surg) Nurse Manager plays a critical role in the healthcare system, overseeing the nursing staff and operations within a medical-surgical unit. Here are some key aspects of the role:
Responsibilities:Staff Management:
- Recruitment and Training: Hire, train, and onboard new nursing staff.
- Scheduling: Create and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
- Performance Evaluation: Conduct regular performance reviews and provide feedback.
Patient Care:
- Quality Assurance: Ensure high standards of patient care and adherence to protocols.
- Patient Safety: Implement and monitor safety procedures to reduce errors and improve patient outcomes.
- Patient and Family Communication: Address concerns and provide support to patients and their families.
Operational Duties:
- Resource Management: Manage inventory and resources to ensure the unit is well-equipped.
- Budgeting: Oversee the unit’s budget, including controlling costs and optimizing resource use.
- Compliance: Ensure the unit complies with healthcare regulations and standards.
Coordination and Collaboration:
- Interdisciplinary Teams: Work with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Policy Development: Develop and implement policies and procedures for the unit.
Leadership and Support:

- Registered Nurse (RN) License: Must hold a current RN license.
- Advanced Degree: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is often required or preferred.
- Experience: Typically, several years of experience in a clinical setting, with previous leadership experience preferred.
Licenses/Certificates:
IL Registered Nurse (RN) license required
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) certification required upon hire. ACLS required by end of month following hire.
