Job Description

NURSING SUMMARY/ PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Aultman Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional nurse that provides direct, primary nursing care to patients/residents. The RN delegates and coordinates patient care, based upon a documented assessment of the patient’s/resident’s needs. The RN supervises the care provided by individuals such as licensed practical nurses, patient care technicians/state tested nursing assistants/nurse aides, medical assistants, and etc., if applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
  • Current, active licensure as a Registered Nurse through the Ohio Board of Nursing.
  • Maintain current, active BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Certification preferred for RNs meeting applicable certification eligibility requirements.
  • Membership in professional nursing organization preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Meal and break times are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate coverage.
  • Shifts are scheduled or changed due to the staffing needs of the unit/department based upon volume and acuity.
  • Work weekends and holidays as assigned or as applicable based on department needs.
  • Cross training depending upon department needs.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

Main 2 Endoscopy / Minor Surgery provides diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures on an outpatient, inpatient, and emergency basis. Additionally, minor surgeries and miscellaneous outpatient procedures are performed. Some of the endoscopy procedures performed in this department include: EGD, ERCP, Colonoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy, Bronchoscopy, PEG tube placement and replacement, and EBUS.

HAZARDOUS EXPOSURE CATEGORY – Category III

Qualifications

  • Prior endoscopy nursing or critical care nursing experience preferred.
  • ACLS certification required within 1 year of hire in department.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Plans for patient care and prepares procedure room.
  • Serves as a patient advocate with a focus on safety and education.
  • Assures continuity of patient care before, during, and after procedure.
  • Safely administers IV sedation, as directed.
  • Assists physician with procedures and maintains a working knowledge of endoscopy equipment and medications.
  • Documents procedure details in a complete and accurate manner.
  • Possess exceptional communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare team.
  • Consistently displays initiative, flexibility, cooperation, and adaptability with assignment.
  • Able to identify and implement effective problem-solving techniques.
  • Maintains a poised, pleasant, and professional demeanor even in the face of adversity.
  • Shows initiative and takes responsibility for professional development and continuing education.

Skills

  • The Main 2 Endoscopy/Minor Surgery RN should demonstrate knowledge of:
    • Aseptic Technique.
    • Proper care and handling of endoscopes.
    • Proper preparation/set up of procedure room.
    • IV Moderate Sedation and Reversal Agents.
    • Proper use of Endoscopy/Minor Surgery instruments.
    • Procedure documentation requirements.
    • Teach-Back Method for patient education.

Working Conditions

  • Typical hours of operationfor the department are Monday through Friday 7:00am – 3:00pm. The department is closed on weekends and major holidays.
  • Shifts are variable based onprocedure volume.
  • When the department is closed, there isat least one RN on call with a 30-minute response time.
  • Call coverage for week nights, weekends, and holidays is assigned in a group rotation.
  • Lunch periods and breaks arecoordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate coverage for procedures.
