Job Description

Primary Objective:

Administer medications under the general supervision of a licensed registered or practical nurse. Provide medications in accordance with policies and procedures of Open Arms Care and within the standards of the state’s Board of Nursing.

Major Functions and Scope:

  • Treat clients with dignity and respect.
  • Assist the nurse in providing oral and topical medications to clients according to the Medical Provider's orders, medication delivery training, and Open Arms Care policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the “eight rights” of medication administration.
  • Monitor clients for possible adverse reactions to medications and report concerns to the supervising licensed nurse.
  • Assist with the re-ordering of medications and ensure clients do not run out of medications at any time.
  • Notify the supervising nurse of any concerns or problems related to assisting clients with their medications.
  • Document all medications on the Medication Administration Record, following medication delivery standards and Open Arms Care policies and procedures.
  • Provide privacy during personal care.
  • Keep medication room, cart, and records locked when not present.
  • Keep medication room and cart clean and organized. Ensure medication labels remain legible at all times.
  • Ensure discontinued and expired medications are removed from the medication room and disposed of appropriately.
  • Order medications and medical supplies as directed by a supervising licensed nurse.
  • Serve as an advocate for the clients.
  • Attend house meetings when appropriate or needed.
  • Attend ISP meetings when deemed necessary.
  • Participate in training to continually improve expertise in the developmentally disabled field.
  • Model technical, professional, and ethical behavior.
  • Guide the development of problem-solving and ethical decision-making repertoires
  • Review written materials (e.g., daily progress notes, data sheets) for information related to medication delivery.
  • Responsible for personal payroll tracking including but not limited to clocking in and out appropriately.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Experience, Competencies and Supervision:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in Tennessee for a minimum of one year required
  • Successful completion of a Board of Nursing-approved Certified Medication Technician program required
  • Valid Tennessee driver’s license required
  • CPR certification required

  • Must be an effective team member
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively

Other Pertinent Job Information:

Ability to lift repetitively a minimum of 50 pounds; tasks may include lifting, repositioning, turning, bending, squatting, etc.
