ABOUT HUMMINGBIRD
CPLC manages the Hummingbird Project for unaccompanied minors in need of culturally competent whole wellness care. CPLC has 53 years of demonstrated quality experience serving the community as a high trust organization. Each minor in our care is case manage, educated and receives healthcare and legal services in a trauma-informed system.
OBJECTIVE AND POSITION SUMMARY
The Teacher Assistant supports the classroom teacher in delivering educational services to children in the ORR program. The Teacher Assistant helps maintain a safe, structured, and culturally sensitive environment, assists with lesson implementation, and fosters the social, emotional, and academic development of the children.
They may have a variety of responsibilities, including, but not limited to:
- Providing one-on-one or small group support to students who need additional assistance.
- Assisting the teacher in developing, implementing, and adapting lesson plans to meet the diverse educational needs of children, ensuring all children have access to grade-level content.
- Developing individualized education (IEPs) for children with special needs and ensuring the implementation of support services.
- As needed, teaching one or more subject areas at assigned levels, such as English, reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
- Monitoring children progress through regular assessments and provide feedback to children on academic performance.
- Maintaining accurate records of children attendance, progress notes, and ORR educational assessments.
- Working with caseworkers, counselors, and other program staff to address children academic needs.
- Encouraging positive behavior and enforcing classroom rules.
- Cultural Sensitivity and Language Support, assist in translating or interpreting when needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
Education /Background:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required. Some college coursework in education or child development preferred.
- Prior experience working with children, especially in educational settings, is highly desirable.
- Atleast 1 year working with unaccompanied children.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Must have a drivers license, with insurance and a clean driving record.
Other Requirements:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Flexibility to work long hours, including evenings and weekends when needed.
Skills:
- Communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including students from various cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
