Job Description

Qualifications/Experience

  • Prefer experience in tour-related industry, but experience in any maritime-related field acceptable.
  • Requires extensive mechanical experience with diesel engines and a working knowledge of related auxiliary systems on a vessel.
  • Must be self-motivated, and self directed; able to prioritize, schedule and conduct all regular maintenance on vessels with minimal supervision.
  • Must be team oriented; able to work efficiently with Captains in a time critical environment.
  • Must be organized and thorough; able to keep accurate logs on maintenance, repairs and projects.
  • Must be prepared to work on short notice; to trouble shoot equipment as problems occur and to expedite repairs to bring vessel back online as quickly as possible.
  • Must be flexible to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50lbs. as required.
  • Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, professional, and most important, reliable.
  • Must be drug free (and able to pass preliminary and random tests as required by the USCG).

Responsibilities

  • Be on site every morning one hour prior to tour departures to consult with Captains, to advise deckhands and to resolve any mechanical issues that present; be available at initial startups in case a system requires troubleshooting prior to tour.
  • Supervise Assistant Port Engineer and Deckhands, monitor engine logs for each vessel; do required maintenance on prescribed schedule; be available to assist with all oil/fuel filter changes on vessels. Maintain an accurate independent log on all work completed.
  • Conduct on-board training with deckhands initially and at various intervals throughout the season for specialized, but predictable underway repairs. (ie. replacing impeller in raw water-cooling system, etc)
  • Work to diagnose and repair mechanical issues in a timely manner.
  • Order, receive and maintain complete inventory of spare parts for engines and auxiliary systems on each vessel.
  • Supervise and maintain on-site septic pump-out system.
  • Maintain docks, ramp, shop and all other aspects of facility, including septic and fuel systems, in good repair with an effort to keep facility neat and well organized.
  • Work efficiently and cooperatively with mechanics/welders dispatched to Ketchikan from Sitka or from other dealerships in Alaska. Assign deckhand/engineers to assist.
  • Ride along on an occasional tour in an effort to monitor vessel systems while underway. Conduct extensive checks of engine and jet room spaces throughout course of trip.
  • Fill in, as needed, aboard vessels as deckhand/engineer and function as an effective member of the crew conducting engine room checks, maintaining passenger safety and performing customer service.
