About This Position

Whitworth University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Environmental Sciences in the Department of Biology. We are seeking an individual with a strong background in environmental science, with a possible specialization in fisheries biology, wildlife ecology, or forestry. The position will begin teaching in the fall of 2025. The typical teaching load is 21 credits across fall, January, and spring terms. Environmental Studies Program Overview
The environmental studies program draws on the expertise of faculty distributed throughout the academic disciplines at Whitworth to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to the study of the natural world. The program integrates insights from the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and theology to develop students’ environmental literacy and competence. It provides a holistic education encouraging thoughtful and informed care of the earth and its creatures. The standard full-time teaching load is usually 21 credits. Key teaching duties include, but are not limited to, introductory ecology and evolution along with associated labs, introductory environmental science, and a field course in the candidate’s area of expertise. An ability to teach GIS and global change ecology is desirable. In addition, the position requires involvement in advising, university service, maintaining an active research agenda, and engaging in departmental activities.
  • Doctoral degree in environmental science, ecology, or related field. Candidates who are ABD will be considered.
  • Evidence of promise in effectiveness at college-level teaching (demonstrated effectiveness preferred).
  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.
  • A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth as a Christian liberal arts institution.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in the language of instruction (English).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience at the college level.
  • Experience teaching field-based courses.
  • Experience teaching or using Geographic Information Systems.
  • Ability to teach interdisciplinarity in the social sciences.

Salary Information
Assistant Professor, Environmental Studies
Term: 9 months
Hiring range: $59,572 to $63,718
Commensurate with years of credited service. 1.75% increase to the minimum salary is granted for each year of credited service at the rank of assistant professor.
