Position Summary
The President, UConn Health Community Network (UCHCN) Medical Group serves as the executive leader responsible for the strategic, operational, financial, and clinical performance of UCHCN Medical Group, a statewide physician organization affiliated with UConn Health and the UConn Health Community Network.
UCHCN Medical Group is a key operating entity within the UConn Health Community Network, a statewide integrated healthcare system connected to UConn Health, Connecticut’s public academic medical center. The Medical Group provides community-based primary care, pediatric, and specialty medical services while leveraging the clinical expertise, academic resources, research capabilities, education mission, and innovation of UConn Health.
Established following UConn Health’s acquisition of Waterbury Hospital, UCHCN Medical Group represents a foundational component of the Network’s statewide strategy to expand access, strengthen physician alignment, enhance care coordination, and create an integrated delivery system that connects community-based care with academic medicine.
Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer of UConn Health Community Network, the President serves as a peer executive to the Presidents of UCHCN’s affiliated hospitals and is accountable for leading the Medical Group as a major operating platform of the Network. The President is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive strategy for physician enterprise growth, clinical excellence and safety, operational performance, financial sustainability, and exceptional patient experience.
The President provides executive leadership for employed physicians, advanced practice providers, practice administrators, and Medical Group leadership while partnering with hospital executives, academic leaders, medical staff leaders, and community physicians to advance a coordinated statewide healthcare system.

Position Purpose
The President is responsible for building and leading a high-performing statewide medical group that advances the mission and strategic priorities of UConn Health Community Network.The President will establish UCHCN Medical Group as an integrated physician organization that delivers exceptional outpatient care, expands access throughout Connecticut, supports network growth, strengthens physician relationships, and creates meaningful alignment among hospitals, ambulatory practices, and UConn Health’s academic mission.
As a peer member of the UCHCN executive leadership team, the President will participate in enterprise-wide strategy, governance, and decision-making while maintaining accountability for the Medical Group’s clinical, operational, financial, and cultural performance.
Essential Responsibilities
Executive Leadership
- Serve as the chief executive leader of the medical group and participate as a peer enterprise executive with responsibility for a major Network operating platform.
- Develop and execute the strategic vision for UCHCN Medical Group in alignment with UCHCN’s statewide growth strategy.
- Establish the Medical Group as a high-performing physician organization supporting current and future UCHCN members.
- Lead the development of a statewide ambulatory strategy encompassing primary care, pediatrics, specialty services, and emerging care models.
- Identify opportunities for growth through physician recruitment, practice development, affiliations, partnerships, and acquisitions.
- Support the integration of future physician practices and entities joining UCHCN.
Medical Group Operations
Establish standardized operating models, performance expectations, and best practices across Medical Group locations. Provide executive oversight for all Medical Group operations, including but not limited to:
- Primary care practices
- Pediatric practices
- Specialty physician practices
- Advanced practice providers
- Ambulatory operations
- Practice administration
- Patient access and scheduling
- Care coordination
- Clinical support services
- Revenue cycle performance
- Digital health and virtual care
- Practice optimization initiatives
Physician Leadership and Alignment
- Build and sustain a physician-led culture focused on collaboration, accountability, quality, and innovation.
- Recruit, retain, and develop outstanding physicians and advanced practice providers.
- Establish physician leadership structures that support engagement and shared accountability.
- Partner with UConn Health academic departments and UCHCN hospitals to strengthen physician alignment.
- Develop physician compensation, productivity, and performance strategies that support organizational goals.
- Promote provider wellbeing, professional satisfaction, and career development.
- Build strong relationships with independent physicians and community partners.
Financial Performance and Growth
Develop strategies that balance growth, access, quality, and financial performance.
Maintain executive accountability for the financial performance of UCHCN Medical Group, including:

Statewide Growth and Network Integration
Lead the continued expansion and integration of UCHCN Medical Group by:
- Developing a statewide ambulatory care strategy.
- Expanding access to primary, pediatric, and specialty care.
- Integrating physician practices associated with current and future UCHCN members.
- Developing coordinated referral relationships across the Network.
- Supporting hospital growth strategies through physician alignment and access expansion.
- Creating scalable operating models that support future growth.
Academic and Clinical Integration
Strengthen the relationship between UCHCN Medical Group and UConn Health by:
- Supporting medical education and training opportunities.
- Expanding opportunities for clinical research.
- Enhancing specialty collaboration.
- Supporting innovation and clinical transformation.
- Strengthening referral pathways between community providers and academic specialists.
Community Leadership
Represent UCHCN Medical Group with healthcare organizations, community partners, governmental stakeholders, academic partners, and industry organizations. Serve as the primary representative of the medical group within the local community by:
- Building relationships with elected officials
- Partnering with community organizations
- Supporting philanthropic initiatives
- Strengthening physician relationships
- Advancing community health priorities
- Representing the hospital before civic organizations and business leaders
Strategy Execution
Provide feedback to UCHCN leadership regarding local market opportunities and challenges. Lead implementation of UCHCN strategic initiatives including:

Enterprise Accountability
Operates within the governance structure of UCHCN and is accountable for execution of enterprise strategies while maintaining excellence in local operations. Key expectations include:

Leadership Competencies
Fully demonstrates:
Qualifications
Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or related field required. MD or DO strongly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive executive leadership experience within an integrated health system, academic medical center, physician organization, or multi-specialty medical group.
- Prior experience as a clinical department chair, vice president of medical affairs, medical director, or equivalent senior executive required.
- Demonstrated success leading complex physician practice operations.
- Experience managing physician enterprise growth, financial performance, and operational transformation.
- Experience developing physician alignment strategies and integrated care models.
- Experience leading organizations through significant change and growth.
- Experience working within a matrixed organizational structure is strongly preferred.
- Experience with physician partnerships, academic medicine, and regulatory environments preferred.
- Experience developing and executing strategic and business plans that advance growth, market position, clinical services, access, and financial sustainability.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, develop, motivate, and retain clinicians, senior leaders, and employees and build a high-performing organizational culture.
- Experience working collaboratively within a larger health system or network, including shared services, system-level initiatives, enterprise standards, and matrixed decision-making.
- Experience establishing effective relationships with community leaders, government officials, boards, business leaders, and other external stakeholders.
