Amanecer in Los Angeles, CA is searching for a part-time Medical Director who wants to grow with us as we ramp up substance-use services.

TITLE: Medical Director
FLSA: Non-exempt - part-time
REMOTE: Remote week-to-week with the occasional ask to come meet in person.
PAY: $165-$180 hourly, negotiable, DOE
MAIN OFFICE LOCATION: 1200 Wilshire Blvd (SPA 4). Secondary location in SPA 6.

And now, in partnership with Substance Abuse Prevention Control (SAPC), we are excited to expand our impact even more!

Over the next months and year, we will be building our substance-use program services aimed at facilitating recovery, directed toward alleviating and/or preventing alcohol and drug problems (excluding residential). This program will be for clients who are stable with regard to acute intoxication/withdrawal potential, biomedical, and mental health conditions. Individual, group and case management support will be provided, as needed. Our multidisciplinary team of a Psychiatrist (MD), certified substance-use counselors, therapists and peer supports, utilize Evidence Based Practices to address Substance Use Disorder (SUD) needs and a trauma-informed, non-judgmental environment for all to heal and start their new beginning.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?
Your contributions will directly impact the success of our SUD services as we go into this new chapter at Amanecer. You will diagnose, prescribe medication, monitor medication side effects and participate in the treatment process. As the Medical Director, you will have oversight of the psychiatric service delivery model. You will provide oversight to the quality of psychiatric care in coordination with the leadership at each facility and work to promote evidence-based practice and to ensure proper care is provided to all clients.

Over time, as we ramp up, you may directly supervise Nurse Practitioner and other medical staff as needed.

  • Complete Psychiatric Evaluation within 10 days of initial request for medication support services and monitors medications during face-to-face visits at least 1x monthly.
  • Evaluate all available clinical data (including initial assessments completed by clinician, request for medication support referrals etc.) pertaining to clients upon admission and on all other occasions, when needed.
  • Perform clinical screening and referral of all conditions in need of consultation from medical, non-psychiatric specialties.
  • Participate in the treatment planning and goal setting process for each client assigned, with special attention to all medical aspects of the plan.
  • Explain medication effects and side effects to client or guardian at admission with review of the Consent Forms for all clients and obtains consent for treatment from appropriate persons.
  • Perform crisis intervention (by telephone if needed) for all clients, during non-office hours as assigned, making any reports to assigned Sr. Director of Clinical Operations.
  • Consult and advise the clinical staff as needed.
  • Ensure that medical care by provided by physicians, registered nurse practitioners, and physician assistants meets the applicable standard of care.
  • Ensure the physicians do not delegate their duties to non-physician personnel.
  • Develop and implement written medical policies and standards for the agency.
  • Ensure that physicians, registered nurse practitioners, and physician assistants follow the provider agency’s medical policies and standards.
  • Ensure that the medical decisions made by physicians and not unduly influences by fiscal considerations.
  • Ensure that the provider agency’s physicians are adequately trained to perform other physician duties, as outline in the most current version of SAPC’s Substance Use Disorder Treatment Services Provider Manual and in accordance with all relevant State and federal regulations.
  • Ensure that treatment is conducted in accordance with the standards and policies in the most current version of SAPC’s Substance Use Disorder Treatment Services Provider Manual.
  • Initially review all provide agency treatment policies and procedures to confirm medical appropriateness and to address and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse.
  • Ensure LPHAs receive a minimum of five (5) hours of CEU’s related to addiction medicine each fiscal year.
  • Other duties as assigned to meet programmatic, departmental and agency

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
Education/Background:

  • Medical degree (M.D.)
  • Board Certified Psychiatrist in California
  • Preferred 1-3 years post-doctoral experience in the delivery of mental health treatment to children, adolescents and adults
  • Experience with Medi-Cal
  • Experience working with children and families
  • Experience in community field work
  • Preferred Spanish/English bilingual

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, especially Microsoft teams).
  • Proven supervisory and effective leadership skills.
  • Excellent documentation and clinical skills.
  • Proven ability to follow-up and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent initiative, flexibility, and stress-management in handling the demands of leadership.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and delegate to balance the many responsibilities, and address the various issues, that a leader faces during the workday.
