THE CITY OF LEAWOOD, KANSAS is looking for
Experienced Horticulture and Forestry Workers
As a Parks Maintenance Worker, you'll be an integral part of maintaining the beauty and functionality of our local parks and green spaces. A few of your daily tasks may include:
- Assisting with the planting and removal of trees at city facilities and parks.
- Assisting in the overall maintenance of trees, shrubs, and plantings on city-owned landscaping.
- Planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, and fertilizing of trees, shrubs, natural areas, and perennial annual plants.
- Collaborating with fellow team members to prioritize tasks and complete assignments efficiently.
- Leading a crew of teammates on a landscape redesign at a city park or facility.
The Parks Maintenance team plays a vital role in maintaining the City of Leawood’s parks for everyone to enjoy throughout the year. As a Park Maintenance team member, you will grow your skills in overall tree and plant maintenance, from diagnosing disease problems in trees, shrubs, and plantings to putting an action plan together on how to treat the disease problems.
You will also learn a wide range of general park maintenance, from applying pesticides, installing park benches, turf maintenance, to maintaining park trails. You will have a work-life balance where your schedule will be 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with some scheduled overtime.

As a Parks Maintenance Worker with the City of Leawood, you will have the opportunity to grow in your skills and knowledge through hands-on job training and attending workshops, outside training, and achieving multiple certifications. You will have a clear career development path to become a Parks Specialist, where you can lead and mentor other Maintenance Workers.

Minimum Requirements: Must have two (2) years of experience in parks maintenance, horticulture, forestry maintenance, or equivalent experience or education. Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
Preferred Requirements: Four (4) years of experience in parks, horticulture, forestry maintenance, or equivalent experience or education. Certified or working towards becoming a Certified Arborist, Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist, Certified Associate or Professional Horticulturist, or equivalent training or certification. Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brakes and tanker endorsements.

Starting Rate of Pay: $22.00 - $24.00 / hourly, DOQ*
(This is a non-exempt benefits eligible position.)
*Applicants that currently hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B is eligible to receive a stipend; up to $5,000 for a Class A and up to $3,000 for a Class B.

Employees also receive a Time-in-Service Bonus equal to 5% of their annual salary every three years of employment on their anniversary date.
