Advance Practice Cardiologist - NP/PA

JOB SUMMARY

An Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in cardiology, either a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA), provides specialized, collaborative care to patients with cardiovascular conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They work closely with cardiologists and other medical staff to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of heart and vascular diseases.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Patient assessment and care: Take detailed medical histories, perform physical examinations, and diagnose and treat common cardiovascular conditions such as heart failure, hypertension, and coronary artery disease.
  • Diagnostic interpretation: Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including EKGs, stress tests, echocardiograms, and imaging studies, and interrogating cardiac devices, to diagnose cardiac conditions and monitor patient progress.
  • Treatment plans and medication management: Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans and prescribe medications in accordance with state laws and institutional guidelines.
  • Patient education and counseling: Educate patients and their families on cardiovascular health, disease prevention, and necessary lifestyle modifications.
  • Care coordination: Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, dietitians, and physical therapists, to coordinate holistic patient care. This includes case management and ensuring seamless transitions of care between settings.
  • Inpatient and outpatient care: Manage patient care across various settings, such as outpatient cardiology clinics, inpatient hospital units, and intensive care units. In a hospital, this may involve daily rounding, ordering and reviewing labs and studies, and coordinating discharge.
  • Procedure assistance: Assist with cardiac procedures and surgeries, such as pacemaker insertions or loop recorder insertions, depending on their training and experience.
  • Medical records: Maintain accurate and timely patient records in an electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Quality improvement and research: Participate in clinical research trials if available and quality improvement initiatives to advance cardiovascular health.

Therapeutic and minor invasive procedures:

  • Medical management: managing medication regimens for patients with various cardiac conditions.
  • Cardioversions: may perform elective or emergency cardioversions to treat certain types of arrhythmias.
  • Temporary pacing: They may insert or manage temporary pacing wires.

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

NURSE PRACTITIONER:

Education

  • Requires a Master's (MSN) or Doctoral (DNP) nurse practitioner degree from a nationally accredited United States or Canadian program.

Training and Experience

  • Clinical experience: 1–3 years of experience in cardiology, critical care, or an acute care setting is required.
  • Strong understanding of cardiovascular diseases, treatments, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in advanced physical assessment, EKG interpretation, and diagnostic reasoning.
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR).
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills are vital for educating patients and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Active WA State RN & ARNP License or Actice Multistate License (MSL)
  • MSL Requirements:
    • Approved 6-Hour Suicide Prevention Training Course Completion
    • Screenshot of submitted demographic data using the Washington State Multistate Nurse Demographic Data Survey.
  • Active Board Certification by a nationally accredited agency as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Active unrestricted DEA license required.
  • Active American Heart Association BLS required.
  • Active American Heart Association ACLS required

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT:

Education

  • Graduation from a nationally accredited Physician Assistant (PA) Program.

Training and Experience

  • Clinical experience: 1–3 years of experience in cardiology, critical care, or an acute care setting is required.
