Carilion Clinic is a six-hospital health system located in beautiful Southwest Virginia. Carilion's flagship hospital, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, is a 763-bed academic medical center, level I trauma center, tertiary/quaternary referral center, and Certified Primary Stroke center that has consistently been ranked by US News as a Best Hospital in the state of Virginia. Carilion is expanding the footprint of CRMH to include the new Crystal Spring Tower (CST) in summer 2025, which will be the home to Carilion's Cardiovascular Institute and expanded Emergency Department, providing more advanced cardiac care and cardiac surgical options for patients in the region.

Clinical Staff I pharmacists are a group of pharmacists who have a variety of responsibilities. A pharmacist hired into this role can expect to work in assignments at CRMH as well as CST. A diverse skill set is desired, as activities include reviewing and processing medication orders, preparing and dispensing medication, providing consultation for other health care providers, and performing clinical monitoring of medications. Shift assignments may include the satellite pharmacy at CST (which will encompass a variety of clinical, admixture, and operations related tasks), the central pharmacy at CRMH, and decentralized clinical zones at CRMH.

Opportunities exist for committee participation, process improvement, research involvement, and precepting of students and residents.

Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is preferred but not required. Applicants must possess excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as demonstrate advanced skills in critical thinking and analysis. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.

The Pharmacist

  • Participates as an active member of interdisciplinary care teams

  • Advises on the most efficacious treatments and participates in pharmacotherapeutic decision making.

  • Participates in collaborative practice protocols.

  • Provides virtual pharmacy consults to Carilion Clinic Ambulatory Offices.

  • Assists with drug information and evidence-based medicine.

  • Consults and provides healthcare providers advice on medications.

  • May need to respond to patient emergencies.

  • Reviews and verifies medication orders for accuracy.

  • Assures preparation of sterile/nonsterile compounding according to Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Assures delivery of medications in a timely manner.

  • Provides education and training for healthcare providers (pharmacy, nursing and medical), students, residents, patients, and patient families.

  • Provides feedback to pharmacy students/residents.

  • Maintains competency in all technologies utilized by the Department of Pharmacy.

  • Supports clinical pharmacy initiatives of the institution.

  • Maintains compliance with statutes, laws, regulations, standards and policies governing the practice of pharmacy.

  • Facilitates age specific pharmaceutical care to patients.

What We Require:

Education: Graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).

Experience: Pharmacy Practice Residency or equivalent Hospital experience is preferred

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: License to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia required within 90 days of hire. During the first 90 days of employment and the licensure application process, pharmacists without a valid license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia may not perform duties restricted to a licensed pharmacist until the license is obtained. If the license is not obtained within 90 days of employment, the employee may be subject to separation from Carilion Clinic.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must possess good leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision. Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills. Work requires knowledge of general office equipment and procedures including computer and keyboarding skills.
