The STS Fleet Operator (CDL) is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient transport of freight using a variety of commercial vehicles, including gasoline or diesel-powered box trucks and tractor-trailers. This position is essential in maintaining the flow of goods between company facilities, customers, and vendors across both short-haul and long-haul routes, ensuring that shipments reach their destinations on schedule and in optimal condition.

Fleet Operators must maintain strict compliance with federal, state, and local transportation laws, including Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Hours of Service (HOS) limitations, and cargo securement requirements. Additionally, operators are expected to uphold STS Recycling, LLC’s safety policies and company values, ensuring that all shipments are handled professionally, securely, and with the utmost care.

This role demands strong attention to detail, excellent time management, and a high level of physical endurance to manage loading, unloading, and long hours on the road. Operators must be adaptable and capable of maneuvering vehicles in diverse environments, from busy highways and congested urban streets to tight loading docks and remote job sites.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities

  • Load and unload trailers independently or with assistance, utilizing mechanical freight-handling equipment when necessary.
  • Secure cargo by properly tying down, wrapping, or bracing within the trailer to prevent damage and ensure safety.
  • Conduct pre-trip, in-route, and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Verify shipment documentation, ensuring accuracy between shipping papers, labels, and cargo details.
  • Drive in accordance with federal and state regulations, with duty periods of up to 11 hours, maintaining compliance with Hours of Service (HOS) requirements.
  • Maneuver vehicles in challenging environments, including heavy traffic, inclement weather, and tight loading dock areas.
  • Maintain all required records, including driver's logs, fuel receipts, trip reports, and compliance paperwork.
  • Adhere to all company policies and federal, state, and local regulations for safe operation of commercial motor vehicles.
  • Promptly report any accidents, vehicle malfunctions, or irregularities encountered during transport.
  • Maintain professional interactions with clients, coworkers, and third parties to uphold company reputation.

Accountabilities

  • Ensure the secure transport of data-sensitive materials in compliance with company and R2 certification policies.
  • Maintain safe and legal operation of commercial motor vehicles at all times.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork related to freight movement and truck operations accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Represent STS Recycling, LLC professionally through responsible driving and customer interactions.

Qualifications & Requirements

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Preferably 25 years of age (exceptions may apply based on experience and maturity).
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math for receipts, log maintenance, and road sign interpretation.
  • Strong oral communication skills for clear interaction with dispatch and customers.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions via phone, in-person, or trip packets.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations related to safe driving, hours of service, inspection, and cargo security.
  • Meet U.S. Department of Transportation medical standards.
  • Pass all required drug and alcohol tests, including pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion screenings.
  • Successfully complete a 30-minute Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) test and a minimum 50-mile on-the-road driving test.
  • Participate in and pass monthly safety training sessions.

Physical Demands

  • Sit and remain alert for up to 11 hours, including up to 8 consecutive hours.
  • Shift manual transmissions and operate foot pedals with precision.
  • Enter and exit the vehicle cab frequently, using steps and handholds, requiring bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, and balancing.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull freight up to 50 lbs., with occasional loads reaching up to 100 lbs.
  • Maneuver freight using mechanical aids or manual handling when required.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods on varying surfaces, including concrete, metal, and potentially slippery conditions.
  • Operate forklifts and lift gates as needed.
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance, including fueling, oil checks, and coolant level inspections.

Work Environment

  • Drivers spend approximately 50% of their time outdoors, exposed to varying weather conditions.
  • Work schedules may be irregular, with long trips, short-notice assignments, and strict delivery deadlines.
  • Operators frequently drive in high-traffic areas, inclement weather, and potentially hazardous road conditions.
  • Extended periods spent in trucks, where noise and vibration levels are higher than those experienced in passenger vehicles.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed to support company operations.
