The Senior Software Backend Engineer will play a key role in designing, developing, and scaling the backend infrastructure that powers a modern commerce technology platform. This position combines backend engineering expertise with data engineering responsibilities, including database architecture, ETL pipelines, and real-time data processing systems. You will contribute to high-impact solutions that connect digital experiences, shoppers, and retail ecosystems through reliable and scalable technology. Working as a senior individual contributor, you will collaborate with product, data, QA, and engineering teams to transform business needs into robust technical solutions. The role offers the opportunity to work with modern cloud technologies, AI-powered development tools, and complex distributed systems in a remote-first environment. You will help shape engineering practices while supporting mission-critical systems used by customers and partners.
The Senior Software Backend Engineer will be responsible for building and maintaining scalable backend services, data systems, and infrastructure while contributing to technical excellence across the engineering organization.
- Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services and APIs using PHP, Node.js, and React.js within the middle-tier architecture.
- Build and optimize database architectures, including MySQL schema design, query optimization, and administration.
- Develop and maintain ETL workflows and data pipelines using Airflow, Parquet data formats, Redshift, and Databricks.
- Design and implement stream processing solutions using Kafka and event-driven architectures.
- Architect, deploy, and maintain highly available and scalable systems on AWS cloud infrastructure.
- Provide production support, participate in on-call rotations when needed, and ensure system reliability.
- Collaborate with Product, Data, QA, and other cross-functional teams to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
- Write clean, maintainable, tested, and well-documented code while actively contributing to code reviews.
- Leverage AI-powered coding tools to improve development efficiency, code quality, and engineering workflows.
- Share knowledge and mentor other engineers on backend development and data engineering best practices.
The ideal candidate is an experienced backend engineer with strong expertise in software architecture, cloud infrastructure, databases, and data processing systems. They should have a proven ability to build reliable solutions, collaborate across teams, and operate effectively in a fast-paced technical environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend systems, databases, and data processing.
- Advanced proficiency in PHP, Node.js, and React.js.
- Deep experience designing, optimizing, and managing MySQL databases.
- Hands-on experience with Redis for caching and in-memory data solutions.
- Experience building and operating Kafka-based stream processing and event-driven systems.
- Strong knowledge of ETL pipelines, Airflow workflows, and Parquet data formats.
- Experience working with AWS cloud services and scalable infrastructure.
- Proficiency using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, Gemini, or similar platforms.
- Experience with Python, Apache Spark, Databricks, or real-time processing frameworks is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills, ownership mindset, and ability to work independently in a remote environment.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Ability to successfully complete a background check.
- Competitive base salary range of $160,000 – $180,000 USD, depending on experience, qualifications, and role scope.
