Job Description

FLSA Status: Nonexempt/Hourly

Effective: September 2025

Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Support Services Lieutenant, the Telecommunicator is responsible for operating the central base radio to provide timely and accurate transmittal of information and messages regarding calls for service to appropriate responding officer/agency and providing these officers/agencies with the information needed for them to provide service.

Education/Training/Experience Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Must have or be able to obtain basic telecommunications licenses within one year of employment.
One year of office related experience is preferred.
A valid Texas driver’s license is required.

Essential Job Functions:
Operates a multi-channel central base radio equipment, department telephone system, and recording devices.
Provides timely and accurate transmittal of information and messages regarding police operations.
Simultaneously listens and understands both telephone and radio traffic and answers multi-line telephones including E911 lines.
Operates computer terminals for specialized access with various automated data banks and simultaneously inputs, retrieves, and maintains information, reading from both computer screens and printouts and operating up to four keyboards at once.
Attends and testifies in all criminal and civil courts when summoned.
Attends training schools/seminars and other city related events which may require travel.
Documents all activity, location and status in the computer aided dispatch system for public safety personnel, quickly disseminating any additional information.
Acts in the absence of the shift supervisor, as required.
Performs other related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of operation of all equipment contained in dispatch office including radio base unit, computer terminals, phone system, and recorders.
Ability to provide crisis intervention/crisis counseling with victims of violent crimes in person or by phone.
Ability to do multiple tasks at the same time.
Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and clearly in English, verbally and in writing; including, speaking distinctly, responding promptly and hearing in the normal range, to protect the safety of officers and the public.
Ability to type a minimum of 40 words per minute.
Ability to work well with the public and coworkers daily.
Ability to maintain a helpful, positive attitude and act in a professional manner in all circumstances.

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Must be able to work in a confined area for eight or more hours and remain seated for long periods of time. May be required to file, sort, carry, hold, lift, push and pull a minimum of 30 pounds; climb ladder to keep the assigned areas clean and retrieve records and/or supplies from storage or archives room.

Tolerates loud noises for prolonged periods of time from computer printers, copiers, shredders. Operates all communications equipment in low-light conditions.

Must be able to work any shift, holidays, and weekends, as needed for scheduling purposes. Occasional overnight travel for training may be necessary.
