What is Expected of You in this Role

Yard Forklift Operator is an operations position responsible for the safe and efficient handling of inbound and outbound logistics involving flatbed trailers, railcars, lumber, panel products, and related materials. This position requires the ability to safely operate heavy-duty construction forklifts, including 7-ton forklifts with a 15,000-15,500 lb. capacity.

  • Execute inbound and outbound logistics for flatbed trailers and railcars.
  • Forklift: Safely operate heavy-duty construction forklifts, including 7-ton forklifts with 15,000 to 15,500 lbs. capacity. Load, unload, move, and stage lumber and panel products using forklift equipment. Conduct routine pre/post-operation forklift inspections to ensure equipment is in safe and proper working condition. Report equipment issues, safety concerns, maintenance needs, or operational delays to leadership in a timely manner.
  • Inventory: Maintain accountability for on-hand inventory, including both physical placement and system-recorded locations. Preserve inventory integrity by performing corrective actions such as banding, re-banding, tacking down packs, and restacking material as required. Ensure material is placed in proper yard, mill, staging, or storage locations. Identify and report product shortages, damages, and quality deficiencies. Communicate inventory discrepancies to leadership in a timely manner.
  • Assist mill operations: Feeding material to saw lines and production equipment. Removing finished goods from saw outfeeds and transporting them to designated staging or storage areas. Clearing scrap, waste material, and dumpsters to maintain uninterrupted production flow. Supporting mill operators during high-volume periods, downtime, or changeovers.
  • Support additional operational projects as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a team-first mindset.
  • Compliance with all safety rules, work instructions, OSHA requirements, and PPE requirements (including but not limited to steel-toed footwear, safety glasses, work gloves, hi-vis gear, hearing protection)
  • Keep the yard and work area clean/organized/safe, and work cooperatively with other team members
  • Perform other operational tasks as assigned
Requirements:

What are the job requirements?

  • Direct forklift skills as through a combination of work experience and certification: Forklift operating experience; hands-on experience repairing and maintaining forklifts and related equipment
  • Work experience in an industrial yard or lumber/mill environment preferred

What Are the Physical Demands?

  • Ability to operate and perform maintenance of forklift and other industrial equipment/saws: Experience operating heavy-duty forklifts with 15,000-15,500 lbs. capacity. Ability to operate equipment controls including levers, pedals, gears, and steering mechanisms.
  • Ability to safely load, unload, move, and stage large, heavy, and oversized materials.
  • Ability to regularly lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, squatting, and lifting
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity; vision for distance, close-up, and distinguishing colors
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Ability to work in an outdoor lumberyard and open warehouse settings with varying temperatures and weather conditions
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and moving equipment/machinery (trucks, railcars, forklifts, etc.) that are typical of a lumber mill operation
