Job Description

Position Purpose

Incumbent is responsible for the handling, storage, mixing and dispensing of human milk and human milk fortifiers for the neonatal and high risk infants. Responsible for the milk storage environment, accurate account of all human milk received and dispensed, and all milk storage supplies. Will work closely with nursing leadership, staff nurses, dietician, prescribing provider, and mothers of patients.

Nature and Scope

The incumbent performs a variety of tasks that are responsible for the preparation, distribution, inventory and management of Human Milk (HM), Donor Milk (DM) and formula. Ensures proper collection, labeling, and storage of milk. Performs tasks to aide and support nursing staff.

This position organizes and prioritizes the following daily work assignments:

• Human milk and formula will be handled using aseptic techniques, which adhere to all sanitary regulations, policies, and standards established by the hospital.

• Retrieves daily feeding orders and prepares accordingly

• Verifies new or questionable feeding orders with providers or Registered Dietitian for accuracy.

• Accurately prepares feedings per established written formulations and per quality control and infection control standards.

• Communicates with nurses, other medical team members and parents to ensure milk or formula is accurately utilized, prepared and stored.

• Monitors daily inventory which could include checking expiration dates, restocking feeding supplies, rotating stock and ordering additional supplies as needed, or notifying appropriate personnel when supplies are needed.

• Ensure that feeding supplies and workstations have been successfully cleaned and sanitized

• Ensures appropriate education for proper labeling, transport and storage of HM and DM

• Works cooperatively with own and other departments to continuously improve the quality of services provided

• Demonstrates excellent customer service and adapts to unanticipated requests.

• Treats all information and data within the scope of the position with appropriate confidentiality and security.

• Follow policies, procedures, and standard work as outlined for the hospital and department.

• Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested

This position does provide patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

Name

Description

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.

High School Diploma or equivalent

Excellent communication and math skills

Experience:

Six months experience in a hospital or clinical setting preferred

License(s):

None

Certification(s):

Infant Feeding Technician Certification within 3 months of hire.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
