Department Overview

The Senior Performance Improvement Consultant provides leadership and technical expertise in the

implementation of the OHSU Performance Excellence System (OPEx) in service to OHSU Health. They

provide advanced internal consultation and coaching to Senior Leadership, Healthcare Managers, Physicians,

and Staff. They provide focused coaching, training, and development to internal PI Consultants both within

the Quality Management Department and in other departments. They design, develop, and deliver components of the OPEx training curriculum at all levels of the organization. The facilitate A3 Planning and Problem Solving with select organizational strategies and goals. They possess and develop a deep understanding of OPEx methods and management systems. They play an active leadership role in developing and improving components of OHSU Problem Solving methodology. They are assigned as the PI Consultant to one or more complex and strategic priorities.

Function/Duties of Position

Strategy Deployment.

  • Utilizes structured problem-solving methodology at all levels of the organization. Effectively uses Leader Standard Work, Daily Management Systems, Problem Solving, Improvement Rounds, and Visual Management to achieve and sustain our performance.
  • Works with the identified Sponsors and Management Guidance Teams to organize our improvement work to achieve the strategic objectives and goals. Works with Quality Management Director and Performance Improvement Manager to design, revise, and improve our OPEx Problem Solving methods and mindset.

Consultation/Coaching.

  • Serves as an expert consultant and advisor in OPEx/Lean/Performance Improvement methodologies. Coaches Senior Leaders, Management Guidance Teams, Managers and Staff in the implementation and maintenance of their OPEx work.
  • Coaches PI Consultants internal to Quality Management and outside of the department to help strengthen their skills, problem solving capabilities, and enhance their OPEx, Project Management, Analytic, Coaching, and Facilitation Skills.

Facilitation/Project Management.

  • Leads complex improvement initiatives using advanced OPEx methods and tools. Drives improvements to positively achieve key institutional priorities and objectives. Promotes and models change management tools and approaches.
  • Establishes standard work and daily management systems to assure that improvements are sustained.

Education/Training.

  • Delivers, develops, revises, and improves OPEx training (formal and informal) in order to develop effective internal performance improvement capability and role development throughout the organization.
  • Develops and delivers new trainings/curriculum as needed. Leads training sessions throughout the year, focusing primarily on trainings for developing directors, managers and staff.

Internal Improvement.

  • Embedded within all of the above responsibilities.
  • Engages and leads improvement of internal processes and systems.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare, science, business, engineering, or statistics. Evidence of relevant continuing education in the area of performance improvement and project management.
  • 7 years of experience in performance improvement.
  • Certification is required, Lean/OPEx Certification
  • Demonstrate through either previous position responsibilities or academic preparation:
    • Strong training skills and facilitation abilities with evidence of successful improvement
      projects.
    • Evidence within last 2 years of Project Management skills working with teams requiring
      self-direction and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Evidence within the last two years of projects showing evidence of detail oriented and
      superb organizational skills
    • Ability to work as a team member
    • Expertise in office automation computer software including word processing,
      PowerPoint, spreadsheet, flow diagram and statistical programs.
    • Basic understanding of statistical and data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Experience working with senior leadership at an organizational or service line level.

Additional Details

Normal office environment or virtual office setting. Generally follows M-F 0800-1700 work week with variability depending on department and project needs.Ability to work virtually and in-person.
