The Opportunity:

Brooklyn Prospect Charter School is seeking a Girls Basketball Coach to lead our after-school basketball program during the winter season. The Coach will plan and deliver high-energy practices, develop individual and team skills, and guide the team through league play. The Coach reports to the Athletic Coordinator and is responsible for building a disciplined, competitive, and student-centered program. The ideal candidate has strong basketball knowledge, experience coaching youth, and a commitment to developing character alongside athletic ability. SEASON: November - March

Girls Basketball-Specific Responsibilities:

As the After School Girls Basketball Coach, your sport-specific responsibilities include:

  • Plan and lead structured basketball practices that develop ball handling, shooting, passing, rebounding, and defensive fundamentals.
  • Teach offensive and defensive systems, including set plays, press breaks, and transition game concepts.
  • Prepare the team for league games through film study, scouting, and focused scrimmages.
  • Organize warm-ups, skill development stations, conditioning, and cool-downs for every session.
  • Ensure all basketball equipment (balls, scoreboard, first aid supplies) is available and in safe condition.

General Coaching Responsibilities:

  • All Prospect Schools coaches are expected to fulfill the following responsibilities as part of the athletics program:
  • Supervise students at all times during practices, games, travel, and dismissal. The bench is never unattended.
  • Take and submit accurate attendance at every practice and game.
  • Plan and run engaging, structured practices at least twice per week that build skills and team culture.
  • Lead tryouts by evaluating player ability, recommending roster selections and cuts, and communicating results to the Athletic Coordinator.
  • Model excellent sportsmanship and professionalism toward officials, opponents, families, and fellow staff.
  • Communicate attendance concerns and behavioral issues to the Athletic Coordinator promptly.
  • Distribute, maintain, and collect uniforms and keep accurate uniform records.
  • Manage daily equipment use, storage, and returns. Report damaged or unsafe items immediately.
  • Follow the approved dismissal plan for every student. A staff member stays until every student is released.
  • Carry emergency contact information and medical notes for all athletes at every practice and game.
  • Complete a pre-session safety check: inspect equipment, check the playing surface, confirm first aid kit and AED access, review weather conditions, and verify medical concerns.
  • Report all injuries to the Athletic Coordinator and Program Manager immediately and complete an incident report the same day.
  • Travel with the team using approved transportation only. No rideshare (Uber, Lyft, taxi) is permitted under any circumstances.
  • Participate in weekly or biweekly check-ins with the Athletic Coordinator.
  • Support end-of-season celebrations and the annual athletics banquet.
  • Uphold the four commitments of every Prospect athletic experience: Safe, Inclusive,
  • Developmental, and Student-Centered

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience coaching students ages 10-18.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must obtain and maintain current CPR/AED certification prior to the start of the season.
  • Must obtain and maintain current concussion recognition training prior to the start of the season.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to employment history and criminal background check.
  • Must have passion for the BPCS mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development.
  • Knowledge of co-ed soccer rules, fundamentals, and age-appropriate coaching methods.
  • Experience creating an environment that welcomes and supports cultural diversity and/or direct experience working with people from multicultural, racially/ethnically diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Able to work flexible hours including afternoons and evenings as required by the game schedule.
  • Available afternoons and early evenings to supervise practices, games, and dismissal.
