Job Description

Academic Tutor - IllinoisCOM

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Academic Tutor - IllinoisCOM based in the United States.

This is a part-time, temporary opportunity supporting medical students through personalized, student-centered academic tutoring.
You’ll help learners strengthen their understanding of course concepts, develop effective study strategies, and become more confident and self-directed.
Tutoring may be delivered individually or in small groups across subject areas aligned with your academic expertise.
The role is fully remote, with virtual sessions designed around student needs, learning preferences, and course objectives.
You’ll use active listening, thoughtful questioning, and collaborative problem-solving rather than simply providing answers.
The position offers an opportunity to develop tutoring, communication, cultural competency, and mentoring skills within a professional medical education environment.
You’ll also contribute to a welcoming and inclusive learning experience while maintaining strong academic integrity and confidentiality standards.

Accountabilities
  • Complete all required tutor training and onboarding before beginning tutoring services.
  • Prepare for and facilitate effective individual and group tutoring sessions based on student needs and approved course objectives.
  • Clarify and reinforce concepts covered in class, explain processes, facilitate problem-solving, and support students in developing effective learning strategies.
  • Use active listening, questioning, inquiry, and collaborative learning techniques to identify student needs, determine appropriate pacing, and monitor progress.
  • Apply study techniques that accommodate different learning styles, preferences, backgrounds, and academic needs.
  • Maintain a professional, respectful, welcoming, and culturally responsive environment for students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Document tutoring attendance and services accurately using designated systems.
  • Protect the confidentiality and integrity of examinations, student records, course materials, and other sensitive information.
  • Provide appropriate assistance with learning equipment, resources, and materials that support student success.
  • Recognize when students may benefit from additional support and make appropriate referrals to relevant academic, campus, or community resources.
  • Participate in professional development activities focused on tutoring effectiveness, cultural competence, reflection, and continuous improvement.
  • Use student feedback and personal reflection to strengthen tutoring practices and outcomes.
  • Communicate directly, professionally, and supportively while encouraging students to become more confident and independent learners.
  • Maintain appropriate academic-integrity boundaries by never completing assignments, providing answers to graded work, predicting examination content, independently changing course requirements, or acting as the course instructor.
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in and in good standing as a second-, third-, or fourth-year student at an accredited MD- or DO-granting medical school.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and mastery in each subject or course area the candidate intends to tutor, supported by relevant coursework, academic performance, faculty recommendations, professional experience, or other approved credentials.
  • Must maintain good academic and professional standing throughout the period of employment.
  • Previous tutoring, teaching, facilitation, mentoring, or academic-support experience is preferred.
  • Ability to provide virtual tutoring from a private, professional environment with reliable internet access and suitable audio and video capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and comprehension skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and adapt communication to individual learners.
  • Strong active listening, questioning, interpersonal, and relationship-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultures, backgrounds, language abilities, and experiences.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and reliability when managing tutoring sessions and documentation.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain strict confidentiality when handling student information, examinations, and course materials.
  • Proficiency in data entry and willingness to use required databases and digital systems.
  • A supportive, patient, collaborative, and student-focused approach to academic development.
Benefits
  • Compensation: $20 per hour base compensation, with additional compensation factors potentially affecting total compensation.
  • Flexible part-time schedule: Typically 2–10 hours per week depending on student needs and tutor availability.
  • Remote work: All tutoring sessions are conducted virtually from a professional remote environment.
  • Professional development: Opportunities to strengthen tutoring, teaching, communication, cultural competency, and reflection skills.
  • Student impact: Meaningful opportunity to support medical students in becoming more confident, successful, and self-directed learners.
  • Additional benefits: Eligible programs may include paid time off, medical and dental insurance, life and disability insurance, a retirement plan with employer contributions, flexible spending accounts, and tuition reimbursement.
  • Collaborative environment: Opportunity to contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and student-centered medical education community.
