Job Description

The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

JOB SUMMARY:

The Patient Placement Supervisor functions independently as an advanced Patient Placement Coordinator to facilitate patient throughput and maximize bed utilization. The Patient Placement Coordinator Supervisor provides consistent leadership and direction for the department when the nurse manager is absent or unavailable.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Supervisor responsibilities:
  • Assists manager with day-to-day operations of Patient Placement and assumes full responsibility for the department in the absence of the manager.
  • Supervises and directs Patient Placement personnel. Is responsible for staff scheduling, staffing decisions, disciplinary action determination, participates in hiring, recommends performance standards, and provides feedback on staff performance.
  • Coordinates with Patient Placement staff, leaders and other applicable staff to determine patients' placement needs.
  • Manages complicated patient placement needs.
  • Participates in the budget process and recommends budgets and budgetary adjustments.
  • Revises/recommends changes to policies and procedures as needed.
  • Direct resource for staff and serves as a main point of contact for other departments for issue resolution regarding Patient Placement job functions.
  • Shares 24/7 responsibility for the department with the Manager.


Patient Placement responsibilities:
  • Functions in the capacity of an advanced Patient Placement Coordinator and is responsible for all job functions of that position.
  • Severs as a direct contact with the Clinical Operations Administrator (COA) and hospital executive leadership regarding bed placement, interfacility hospital, or transfer issues from other units or hospitals.
  • Provides clear and concise information regarding issues and bed capacity as requested.
  • Monitors patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and census to facilitate patient throughput.
  • Escalates issues in a timely manner so that solutions can be formulated and applied when indicated; participates in solution formulation.
  • Trains staff in Patient Placement processes and job functions in conjunction with the recommendations of the Manager.
  • Collects and summarizes bed utilization data.
  • Assists Manager in monitoring all department reports for area of improvement.
  • Practices and promotes positive peer and customer relations.
  • Provides support to all customers with a high degree of service excellence standards.
  • Performs related duties as required.


Marginal or Periodic Job Functions:
  • Works independently.
  • Displays critical thinking.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure established for department.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


EQUIPMENT:
  • Standard office equipment


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments.
  • Must be able to work in a high stress environment and independently manage multiple competing work priorities.
  • Requires flexibility with assigned tasks as they change to meet departmental needs.
  • Required to be professional and maintain UTMB patient confidentiality.


Standard office environment. May be required to work within the confines of a prison, jail, or juvenile detention center.

Security clearance is required; pre-employment drug testing is also required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's Degree or five years of equivalent experience.
  • One year or more of leadership experience.


Salary is commensurate with years of relevant work experience.
