Department Overview

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is organized into three sections: adult cardiac surgery, general thoracic surgery and pediatric cardiac surgery. Faculty members in each of these sections are experts in their field and specialize in the surgical treatment of advanced heart and lung disease. They work in conjunction with the OHSU Division of Vascular Surgery, as well as the Knight Cancer Institute, the Knight Cardiovascular Institute and Doernbecher Children¿s Hospital to provide comprehensive care. Active in research as well as education, the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery sponsors both a residency program and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship program.

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

This position reports to (supervisor): The Division Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery.

Function/Duties of Position

The General Thoracic Surgeon will develop and maintain a clinical practice focused on the surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the lung, esophagus, mediastinum, trachea, chest wall, and pleura within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Clinical responsibilities include participation in multidisciplinary thoracic oncology programs and the provision of patient care services primarily at OHSU Hospital, with additional clinical responsibilities at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center and PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, as assigned. The faculty member will actively participate in the education and supervision of cardiothoracic surgery residents, general surgery residents, fellows, and medical students and will contribute to the academic mission of OHSU through scholarly activity, research, and service on departmental and institutional committees.


Required Qualifications
  • American Board of Thoracic Surgeons (ABTS) board certified or board eligible

  • Oregon and Washington medical licensure or eligibility for licensure

  • Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certification

  • Eligibility for medical staff membership and clinical privileges at OHSU Hospital, Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.
