JOB SUMMARY

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the med/surg unit provides essential hands-on care to patients while also supporting unit operations through clinical and administrative functions. The role contributes to the department and hospital by promoting safe, efficient, family-centered care and ensuring smooth communication and workflow across the unit. Scope of responsibility includes but is not limited to direct patient care and clinical support, maintaining organization and cleanliness of the unit, assist the director/clinical coordinator with day-to-day operations as well as other nursing unit secretary duties.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent

Certifications/Licenses:

• BLS
• Current Wyoming CNA license

Job Knowledge and Skills:

• Prefer experience in acute care, long-term care or skilled care
• Prefer experience in computer use and clerical skills

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

General:

• Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Responds appropriately and effectively to emergency situations in accordance with hospital protocols.
• Demonstrates respect, trust, safety, confidentiality, and cooperation in all interactions with patients, families, practitioners, and colleagues.
• Provides excellence in internal and external customer service and maintains a positive image of the hospital at all times.

Role-Specific:

• Stock unit supplies and ensure readiness of patient care areas, rooms and equipment
• Enter supply charges accurately and timely per unit and hospital guidelines
• Answer phones, call lights and patient or family requests professionally and promptly
• Complete all required training and competencies (e.g., BLS, skills days, emergency drills)
• Accurately document care and observations in the electronic medical record (EMR)
• Report concerns and patient care issues through the appropriate chain of command or by using the hospital safety reporting system.
• Participate in special projects or additional duties as assigned by unit leadership
• Assist providers and staff with telemedicine appointments. Ie: U of U Telehealth, U of U Teleneuro, QLER Telepsych, Rocky Mtn. Infectious Disease.
• Assist staff with IT, BioMed or maintenance requests
• Assist with the paperwork of transferring patients to higher care facilities as well as skilled nursing facilities.
• Scan and fax documents
• Get the Medicare Discharge Appeals form signed prior to discharge
• Contact transportation for patients in need ie: taxi or ambulance
• Assist in stripping rooms upon discharge of a patient
• Create admission folders to be placed in patient rooms during room set up.
• Provide direct patient care to adult and pediatric patients within assigned scope of practice, including but not limited to vital signs, hygiene and toileting assistance, daily weights, bed changes, patient showering, feeding assistance, and support with ambulation, positioning, and transfers
• Maintain clean, safe, and organized patient rooms and shared care areas in accordance with infection prevention and safety standards
• Assist the Unit director in duties that relate to the overall functioning of the unit.
