Job Description

Medical Director

At Curai, we believe that access to high-quality healthcare is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. Our mission is to radically transform healthcare by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and clinical expertise to make care more affordable, accessible, and effective for everyone.

Curai Health is redefining what primary care can be: a 50-state plus D.C., AI-enabled, fully virtual medical group built to make high-quality, asynchronous care accessible at scale. We're looking for a Medical Director who is ready to lead from the front — shaping clinical strategy, developing the next generation of Clinical Leads, and helping define what responsible, physician-led AI integration looks like in modern primary care.
This is a rare opportunity for an experienced physician-leader to build and scale a clinical organization from a position of real influence, reporting directly to the medical group President and partnering closely with executive, product, and compliance teams to bring a bold vision of virtual care to life.
About the Medical Director Role
As Medical Director, you'll serve as both a practicing clinician and a clinical leader — directly managing a team of Clinical Leads, driving clinical quality and performance across the medical group, and acting as a key voice in how AI is responsibly integrated into patient care. You'll chair the Credentialing Committee, serve as a collaborating/supervising physician for nurse practitioners where required, and participate in direct patient care and a 1-in-2 rotating on-call schedule alongside your leadership duties.
What You'll Do
People Management
  • Partner with the medical group President to execute clinical vision and strategy, setting expectations for performance, culture, and leadership development
  • Directly manage and develop a team of Clinical Leads, ensuring effective supervision, coaching, and support of frontline clinicians
  • Hold the clinical workforce accountable to performance standards across patient satisfaction, documentation, response time, quality, and productivity
  • Lead clinical workforce acquisition and integration — from candidate profiling and interviews through onboarding and training
Clinical Excellence & Quality
  • Implement and monitor QA programs, clinical review processes, and evidence-based clinical standards
  • Use firsthand platform experience to identify workflow improvements, technology gaps, and opportunities to enhance the patient and clinician experience
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce clinical SOPs and guidelines
  • Monitor clinical outcomes and patient safety metrics, leading remediation efforts as needed
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including PC-MSO structures, multi-state CPOM rules, and HIPAA data security standards
  • Chair the Credentialing Committee
  • Serve as a collaborating/supervising physician for nurse practitioners where required
Direct Patient Care
  • Provide direct patient care to fill staffing gaps during periods of high demand, ensuring continuity of care
  • Participate in a 1-in-2 rotating on-call schedule supporting clinical and administrative operations after hours and on weekends
Collaboration & Operations
  • Collaborate across Operations, Product, Engineering, Legal, and Compliance to support safe, effective AI integration into clinical care
  • Develop and refine clinical processes that scale with organizational growth
  • Manage multiple work streams, delegate effectively, and meet or exceed deadlines
  • Partner with Operations on patient satisfaction initiatives and customer support optimization
What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree
  • Active, unrestricted medical license, with the ability to obtain and maintain licensure in all 50 states plus D.C.
  • Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or an equivalent primary care specialty
  • 10+ years of clinical practice experience as a practicing primary care physician
  • 5-7+ years of people leadership or clinical supervisory experience (e.g., Lead Physician, Associate Medical Director, Medical Director, or equivalent), with a proven track record managing and developing clinical teams at scale
  • Demonstrated experience developing, or contributing to, clinical protocols and quality improvement programs
  • Expert-level familiarity with EHRs, remote monitoring tools, and asynchronous communication platforms
  • Availability for a 1-in-2 rotating administrative on-call schedule and attendance at clinician meetings aligned with active clinical shift times
  • Ability to participate in limited required business travel
  • Based in the United States, with the ability to provide active, on-platform clinical care
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in health technology, digital health, or a multi-state virtual care organization
  • Experience and comfort using agentic tools and LLMs to improve personal and team workflow efficiency
  • Experience with AI/ML applications in clinical care delivery
  • Track record of building and maintaining clinical SOPs and quality assurance programs
  • Experience working with health plan partners and value-based care models
  • MPH, MBA, or other advanced degree in healthcare administration or business
  • Growth mindset with a continuous commitment to learning, feedback, and development
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving startup environment
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across clinical and non-clinical audiences
Salary: $260,000 - $270,000 / year
