ECST Outreach and MESA Program

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position: Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Work performed primarily in a standard office environment. Evening and weekend work is required with some regularity (4-6 Saturdays annually) and evening work 1-3 times a month, non-exempt position. Some travel will be required. This position is eligible for benefits. This is a temporary appointment expiring on or before June 30, 2027, subject to renewal based on funding.

The Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESSA) program is a statewide program that helps underserved and underrepresented students achieve success in STEM studies and careers. MESA at Cal State LA supports university students primarily in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology and 6th -12th grade students in approximately 26 public schools in the greater Los Angeles area.

In Collaboration with MESA Staff, the MESA Coordinator will work with the Student Engagement Team to coordinate activities and programs related to the MESA University and MESA College prep programs.

The MESA Coordinator will be primarily responsible for the MESA Industry Advisory Board; regular university program social events such as meetings, workshops, and coffee socials; University student travel planning, university club liaison, MESA University student intake meetings, Event planning and support for both University and College Prep Programs as needed.

The MESA Coordinator will also work to support the MESA team with planned activities and events including MESA Day and will creatively contribute to achieving the long-term program goals and building strategies to meet the changing needs and services of Cal State LA MESA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The coordinator will reinitiate and manage the MESA Industry Advisory Board (IAB) which serves both the college prep and university program.
  • MESA manages a financial aid scholarship for the students of ECST. The coordinator will manage all scholarship outreach and communicate and track eligible and enrolled students in collaboration with financial aid.
  • MESA University recruitment and execution of regular university program social and support activities. Regular activities include hosting informational meetings and weekly meetings. Recruitment consists of pop-up tabling, club fair tabling, class presentations, etc.
  • Project Coordination- Under the general direction of the Director, the incumbent will assist with the planning and implementation of programs and services of ECST Outreach and MESA Program.
  • Conduct MESA University student intake meetings which involve meeting with MESA University students to confirm eligibility to the program, but more specifically to develop rapport with students, ensure students are aware of support available at the university and the ECST student Success center, and serve as one of the points of contact for students to reach out to when they are in need.
  • Assist with travel planning. MESA university student travel may take students to meet companies, see projects, and attend conferences, and participate in competitions and events. Travel planning will also include chaperoning and organizing a chaperone as needed.
  • Assist with logistics involved with events, activities, and other various programming within the Cal State LA MESA.
  • Work with MESA specialists in all MESA Day planning aspects.
  • Manage and balance the MESA University budget provided by the director.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two (2) years of program coordination administrative experience. The incumbent must be a team player; have computer skills; excellent organization skills; and written and oral communication skills. The incumbent must be creative, enthusiastic, outgoing, reliable, and cooperative. The incumbent must have the ability to take initiative and learn new skills and concepts; commute to assigned locations in the community as needed; work with potentially sensitive and confidential materials; and work well with others, community representatives, and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience directly related to working with K-16 students.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds of the community served.
  • Demonstrated interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
  • Ability to work and connect with first-generation students.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Specific experience working with university students.
  • Event planning experience.
  • Familiarity with Canvas and Salesforce
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrate experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the UAS.
