About the Role:

Under the general supervision of the Practice Manager, the Custodian has the primary responsibility of ensuring the overall presentation of the clinic is clean, clutter-free and well maintained. This includes cleaning the health center in such a way to promote health and safety while reducing the spread of infection. It is the role of the custodian to follow daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules at Healthy Connections, Inc. including, but not unlimited to, the exam rooms, kitchen, office areas, bathrooms, storage areas, and entrances. Yard/Lawn maintenance is also a part of this role and may include keeping grass cut and flower beds clean, weeded, and pruned. The custodian follows the cleaning/maintenance schedule when the patients are not in the health center so no interference with their care occurs. The custodian may also be responsible for performing additional duties not stipulated.

Qualifications:

a. High School Diploma or equivalent.

b. Certification in HVAC, plumbing, or electrical systems a plus.

c. Knowledge of healthcare regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission, OSHA)

d. Performs tasks requiring independent knowledge in addition to procedures or instructions provided.

e. Have essential physical and mental capabilities in the following: Interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, follow directions, comprehension, calculating, reading, writing, speaking, evaluating, mathematics, organizing, and innovation.

f. Must have a valid, unencumbered Arkansas driver’s license, proof of liability insurance, and access to reliable transportation.

g. Must participate in annual training on OSHA blood-borne pathogen compliance standards and any other relative OSHA standards.

h. Must have ability to maintain confidentiality.

i. Ability to travel to all locations and to meetings outside of the service area.

j. Ability to understand verbal communication and instruction, exchange verbal information and to present information verbally.

k. Ability to establish and maintain effective, courteous working relationships with patients, staff team members, business entities and others.

l. Ability to organize, prioritize and problem-solve independently.

Custodial Duties:

a. Clean and sanitize restrooms using established practices and procedures.

b. Clean, dust and wipe furniture and mirrors.

c. Sweep, mop or vacuum floors daily.

d. Empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers.

e. Replace light bulbs.

f. Washes and sanitizes bathroom fixtures daily with germicidal solution.

g. Refill restroom dispensers.

h. Strip, clean, buff, apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets as directed.

i. Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required in work assignments.

j. Clean entrance and exit including glass, doors and hardware.

k. Clean, wash and disinfect drinking fountains.

l. Secure building when facilities are not in use, checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants and turn off lights.

m. Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.

n. Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.

o. Wash accessible interior and exterior windows, bathroom, kitchen, clean blinds, and launder cleaning rags and dust mops.

p. Attend to emergencies when necessary.

q. Handle recycling materials.

B. Lawn Maintenance

a. All lawn care maintenance as assigned. Must be skilled with lawn care equipment, and follow all OSHA required safety rules for using lawn care equipment.

b. This includes mowing, weed eating, blowing, sweeping as needed.

C. Maintenance/Repair

a. Perform general building maintenance including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and painting.

b. Conduct routine inspections of clinic systems (lighting, fire alarms, air conditioning, etc.).

c. Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies to minimize disruption to clinic operations.

d. Maintain and repair medical equipment support systems (e.g., sinks, sterilizers, air compressors), coordinating with specialists as needed.

e. Ensure compliance with OSHA and local health & safety regulations.

f. Monitor and maintain clinic cleanliness and organization of mechanical and utility spaces.

g. Work with outside vendors and contractors for specialized maintenance or repairs.

h. Keep detailed records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance logs.

i. Support the setup and maintenance of clinic equipment and furniture as needed.

j. Assesses needs of the building and grounds and performs routine maintenance as needed.

k. Regularly assesses building and grounds and communicates issues/needs that may require help from the Maintenance team.

Skills:

The required skills enable the custodian/maintenance professional to effectively maintain cleanliness and safety standards critical in healthcare settings. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and equipment ensures proper sanitation and infection control, protecting patients and staff. Physical stamina and manual dexterity are essential for performing diverse maintenance tasks and handling equipment safely. Preferred skills such as basic repair abilities and familiarity with regulatory standards allow the individual to address facility issues promptly and maintain compliance. Strong communication skills facilitate collaboration with healthcare personnel, ensuring maintenance activities support the facility's operational needs without disruption.
