Job title: Assistant Director of Nursing
Mentored by: Director of Nursing
Accountable to: Elders, Families, and Core Team
Position Summary:
The Assistant Director of Nursing collaborates with Core Team all departments to provide leadership and accountability and ensures policies and procedures are in place to meet Federal and State regulations as well as standards of practice. In addition the Assistant Director of Nursing supervises and develops nursing staff members and oversees the programs of the department providing core team support as needed.
Qualifications & Education Required:
- Current New York State Registered Professional Nursing License, Baccalaureate degree and a minimum of five (5) years of progressive nursing and supervisory experience.

Position Competencies:
- Interpersonal skills: support emotional, physical and social well-being of Elders, Core Team, and Nurses
- Problem solving / decision making: ability to apply the problem solving process to develop real-time solutions
- Leadership skills: provide consultation services to support elders and Core Team as needed, lead by example, distribute responsibilities among interdisciplinary team members
- Coaching and development: set clear expectations, coach Core Team, manage Nursing Operations Specialists, Infection Preventionist and Nurse Educators
- Organizational skills: talent management (participate in staffing, hiring, performance improvement), leads the Nursing Department Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Committee, financial Acumen (participate with budgeting, payroll and ordering)
- Elder advocate: advocate optimal quality of life for elders by responding to QOL concerns
- Technical competence in AOD, MS Excel and Word, and Outlook
Position Responsibilities:
- Performance management of Nursing operations Specialists, Infection Preventionist and Nurse Educators
- Participate in gathering, reporting and analyzing and QAPI data
- Chair the Nursing Department QAPI meetings and leads the department through the QAPI process
- Act as clinical liaison with the IT Department for implementation and monitoring of EMR
- Serve on the Pharmacy and InterDisciplinary Policy and Procedure Committees
- Participate in the development and maintenance of Nursing Standards utilizing evidence based Nursing Practice
- Oversee the Nursing Policy and Procedure Committee
- Ensure accountability for nursing discipline standards of practice
- Conduct investigations in accordance with NYS DOH and Federal guidelines; oversees and monitors incident reporting and investigation processes
- Provide Neighborhoods with clinical guidance and support.
- Act as a liaison between St. John’s and professional associations and community resources as requested
- Assists in the evaluation and identification of educational needs of the staff and makes recommendations for specific educational opportunities to the Nurse Educators
- Identifies goals for professional self-development and seeks continuing education opportunities to attain these goals.
- Implement and maintain standards of performance for the nursing staff with regard to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.
- Assume role of acting DON in the absence of the DON.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to maneuver between buildings within SJH campus
- Access to resident’s rooms and communal areas
- Sitting, Standing, and walking
Exposure to Conditions:
- Possible exposure of contagious diseases
