Reports to: Director of Information Management / Lead IT
Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt — Remote / Hybrid
Salary Range: $75,000 – $90,000, based on experience and certifications
On-Call: Shared rotational on-call to support a 24/7/365 operation
Overview
Emend Healthcare's Information Technology function provides and supports the technology infrastructure that keeps our mental health and substance abuse treatment operations running. This role supplements our existing IT function: working alongside and reporting to our senior IT resource, the IT Systems Engineer II shares day-to-day responsibility for supporting and administering the environment across geographically distributed locations.
This is a hands-on, broad generalist role for a mid-level engineer who is comfortable across systems, networking, cloud, and end-user support. The senior IT resource owns architecture, complex escalations, and strategy; this position takes ownership of routine administration, end-user support, and project execution — freeing up senior capacity while building depth across the stack. Strong candidates are self-directed, prioritize well under pressure, and know when to escalate.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Own day-to-day administration, monitoring, and performance of all VMware, Windows, and Linux systems, cloud infrastructure (Azure, Google Cloud, AWS), storage, and network systems.
• Share ownership of the end-user support queue with the senior IT resource, handling escalations from a first-tier help desk (MSP or AI-assisted); provide troubleshooting and training for staff across multiple sites.
• Administer Windows Server, Active Directory / Group Policy, Microsoft 365 / Entra ID, endpoint management (Intune/SCCM), and application-specific servers in a virtualized (VMware / CentOS) environment.
• Perform OS administration for local and remote systems, including installation, patching, security hardening, data backup, and storage/array management.
• Ensure backup, restore, and disaster-recovery capabilities meet or exceed defined service levels; test recovery procedures on a regular cadence.
• Administer and support clinical and business applications, including KIPU EHR, the 8x8 phone/contact platform, and Microsoft SQL Server databases.
• Administer network and security infrastructure (Cisco / Meraki / UniFi), including DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewalls, load balancing, and clustering.
• Maintain HIPAA-aligned security controls; support audits, access reviews, and documentation of safeguards for protected health information (PHI).
• Create and maintain IT policies, procedures, runbooks, and technical documentation.
• Manage vendor and MSP relationships; evaluate hardware, software, and service providers, and prepare purchase justifications and project benefit analyses.
• Assist the senior IT resource with the design and delivery of infrastructure projects and continuously identify improvements to system performance, security, and cost.
• Share rotational on-call coverage for emergencies in a 24/7/365 operation; occasional after-hours or extended work is required during incidents and planned maintenance.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

This job description describes the general nature and level of work and is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities. It does not constitute an employment contract, and employment is at will.
Requirements:Required Qualifications
• 3+ years of hands-on systems administration / IT support experience in a production environment. (Note: the previous “1 year minimum” is too low for the breadth this role covers.)
• Hands-on experience with Windows Server, Active Directory / Group Policy, and Microsoft 365; virtualization experience (VMware) required.
• Working knowledge of Windows scripting and automation — PowerShell required; Batch/legacy scripting a plus.
• Familiarity with enterprise storage (SAN/NAS), backup and disaster-recovery concepts, DNS, and DHCP.
• Exposure to at least one major cloud platform (Azure, Google Cloud, or AWS); depth in any one is a plus.
• Networking fundamentals with Cisco / Meraki / UniFi hardware; ability to diagnose common hardware and OS-level problems.
• Comfortable being a broad generalist — willing to work across systems, networking, endpoints, and end-user support rather than specializing narrowly.
• Understanding of HIPAA and safeguarding of PHI in a healthcare setting.
• Strong written and verbal communication; able to translate technical issues into plain language for clinicians, residents, and leadership.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field preferred; equivalent experience and certifications accepted in lieu of a degree.
• Valid driver's license and insurance (occasional travel between sites).
Preferred / “Nice to Have”
• Behavioral health, substance abuse, or other healthcare IT experience — a plus.
• Experience with KIPU EHR and/or the 8x8 platform.
• Linux administration (Red Hat / RHEL, CentOS).
• Microsoft SQL Server administration.
• Relevant certifications: Microsoft (Azure Administrator, MCSA/equivalent), VMware (VCP), Cisco (CCNA), Google Cloud, or AWS.
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods working at a computer. Ability to occasionally lift and move IT equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and to reach, stoop, or kneel to install and service hardware. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role.
