Position Summary:
Reporting to the Clinical Nurse Educator, the Infection Control Coordinator is responsible for leading, coordinating, and maintaining the organization’s infection prevention and control program across all clinical and operational areas. This role serves as a key clinical and operational resource, ensuring adherence to evidence-based infection control practices, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies to promote patient and staff safety.
The Infection Control Coordinator supports surveillance, education, compliance monitoring, outbreak response, and workflow optimization related to infection prevention. This role partners closely with nursing leadership, providers, quality, facilities, and external agencies to ensure high-quality, safe, and compliant care delivery.
Primary Responsibilities:
Infection Prevention & Control Program Oversight
· Lead and coordinate the organization’s infection prevention and control program
· Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local infection control regulations (e.g., DPH, CDC, OSHA, Joint Commission)
· Develop, implement, and maintain infection control policies, procedures, and standard work
· Serve as the subject matter expert on infection prevention practices across the organization
· Monitor emerging infectious disease trends and provide guidance to leadership and staff
Surveillance, Monitoring & Compliance
· Conduct ongoing infection surveillance activities across all clinical departments
· Track, trend, and report infection-related data, including healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and exposure events
· Perform routine infection control rounds and audits (e.g., hand hygiene, PPE use, environmental cleaning, sterilization processes)
· Identify gaps in compliance and partner with leadership to implement corrective actions
· Prepare reports for internal leadership, quality committees, and regulatory bodies as required
Education & Staff Training
· Develop and deliver infection prevention education and competency-based training for clinical and non-clinical staff
· Partner with the Clinical Nurse Educator to integrate infection control into onboarding, annual competencies, and ongoing education
· Provide real-time coaching and support to staff during clinical operations
· Develop educational materials, tip sheets, and communication tools to reinforce best practices
Exposure Management & Outbreak Response
· Lead response to exposure events involving patients or staff (e.g., bloodborne pathogens, airborne/droplet exposures)
· Conduct investigations, risk assessments, and documentation for exposure incidents
· Coordinate testing, follow-up, and reporting in collaboration with occupational health and leadership
· Develop and implement outbreak management plans, including mitigation strategies and communication workflows
· Serve as liaison with public health agencies for reporting and guidance during outbreaks
Workflow Optimization & Program Development
· Collaborate with nursing leadership and operations to integrate infection control practices into clinical workflows
· Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement solutions to enhance safety, efficiency, and compliance
· Support Epic and documentation workflows related to infection control (e.g., isolation status, screening tools, reporting)
· Partner with facilities and environmental services to ensure safe and compliant environments of care
Regulatory & Accreditation Support
· Lead infection control readiness for regulatory surveys (e.g., Joint Commission, DPH)
· Participate in mock surveys, tracers, and audits to ensure continuous readiness
· Maintain all required documentation, logs, and compliance records
· Support corrective action plans and follow-up for any identified deficiencies
Collaboration & Communication
· Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including nursing, providers, quality, facilities, and administration
· Participate in internal committees related to infection control, quality, and patient safety
· Represent the organization in external infection control meetings, collaboratives, and partnerships as appropriate
· Serve as a key communication resource during infection-related events and organizational updates
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Perform additional duties as assigned to support organizational priorities and patient safety initiatives.
Requirements:Qualifications & Skills:
· High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred
· Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) preferred
· Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an ambulatory care or community health setting required
· Prior experience or strong interest in infection control, quality, or patient safety initiatives preferred
· Completion of infection control training (e.g., CDC-based training modules) required within a defined timeframe of hire
· Demonstrated knowledge of basic infection prevention practices, including hand hygiene, PPE use, sterilization, and standard precautions
· Experience supporting clinical workflows, patient care, and documentation within an EHR (Epic preferred)
· Strong organizational skills with the ability to track, monitor, and report data accurately
· Ability to conduct audits, follow established protocols, and escalate concerns appropriately
· Strong communication skills with the ability to educate and support clinical and non-clinical staff
· Ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams and follow direction from clinical leadership
· Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and patient-centered care
Physical Requirements:
· Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods (at least 50% of the time)
· Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and load onto shelves
· Visual acuity sufficient for frequent reading and computer use
