Job Description

Do you have a passion for building brands, positioning executives, shaping consequential conversations, and earning meaningful media attention? Do you want to help technology companies explain why their work matters to business, policy, and public audiences?

Invariant seeks a Senior Manager or Director to join its growing Technology & Innovation communications practice. In this role, you will help lead communications strategy and execution for technology companies at critical moments of growth, change, and public attention. You will work directly with founders and senior executives while growing into greater responsibility for client strategy, team leadership, and business development.

Our clients range from Fortune 500 companies to venture-backed startups working across artificial intelligence, defense, space, digital infrastructure, enterprise technology, and other emerging sectors. You will help founders and C-suite executives solve complex challenges, create opportunities for growth, and break through crowded media environments to reach the audiences that matter most to their businesses.

Invariant is a different kind of firm. We approach communications, public affairs, government relations, and business strategy as interconnected disciplines. You will do challenging, consequential work here. If that sounds interesting to you, come join us.

What You'll Do

- Help lead communications strategy and execution across a portfolio of technology clients, taking on greater strategic and client leadership responsibility based on experience and performance.

- Develop and execute media relations strategies that translate client business and policy priorities into timely, credible stories for business, technology, policy, and trade media.

- Build and maintain relationships with reporters, editors, producers, podcast hosts, and other influential voices; identify news hooks and pursue opportunities with creativity, persistence, and sound editorial judgment.

- Lead communications around funding rounds, partnerships, product launches, executive milestones, policy developments, and other moments that can materially affect a company's trajectory.

- Build communications infrastructure for clients with limited internal capacity, including messaging, media materials, editorial calendars, workflows, and measurement.

- Counsel founders and C-suite executives, with increasing independence, on reputation management, market positioning, crisis preparedness, stakeholder engagement, and high-stakes communications moments.

- Develop integrated campaigns that connect earned media, executive positioning, thought leadership, digital channels, and public affairs to clients' business objectives.

- Collaborate across communications, government relations, public affairs, research, and digital strategy, and contribute to new-business research, proposals, and pitches.

What Makes This Role Unique

You will work closely with senior counselors while earning increasing authority over client relationships, strategy, and team leadership. The role offers exposure to founders, senior executives, policymakers, investors, and media working at the center of consequential technology debates.

You should be energized by translating between complex technology, founder vision, and audience reality. This role requires intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and the grit to keep moving when the first approach does not work. Depending on experience, you may independently lead accounts or grow into that responsibility with support from more senior colleagues.

Who You Are

- Seven or more years of strategic communications and media relations experience, with level determined by the scope, independence, and leadership demonstrated; agency experience and work with technology or high-growth companies strongly preferred.

- Demonstrated success developing media strategies, identifying strong stories, pitching reporters, and converting ideas into meaningful coverage and relationships.

- Strong media instincts and a genuine desire to deepen expertise in media relations, executive positioning, and issues management.

- Fluency in the pace and constraints of startups and other high-growth companies, with the resourcefulness to produce strong work with small teams and imperfect information.

- The ability to manage several client relationships and workstreams without losing command of details, deadlines, or strategic priorities.

- Existing relationships with technology, business, policy, national security, or trade media, combined with the initiative to build new relationships continuously.

- Exceptional intellectual curiosity and the ability to quickly master complex technologies, business models, and policy environments, then translate them into clear and compelling narratives.

- A strategic and creative problem-solver who anticipates client needs, generates original ideas, and finds another route when an obvious approach stalls.

- Strong judgment about how earned media, podcasts, newsletters, social channels, events, and emerging formats can work together to reach specific audiences.

- Proficiency with artificial intelligence tools and curiosity about how emerging capabilities can improve research, analysis, quality control, and client service.

- An exceptional writer and editor who can produce sharp media pitches, executive materials, messaging, thought leadership, and strategic recommendations.

- Composure and good judgment in fast-moving environments with competing clients, tight deadlines, and changing priorities.

- The ability to give clear direction, deliver candid feedback, develop junior colleagues, and earn trust with senior clients and firm leaders.

- An entrepreneurial mindset and interest in contributing to business development, evolving the practice's offerings, and building Invariant's position in technology communications.

- Proficiency with media databases such as Cision and Meltwater, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Compensation & Benefits

The target salary range for this role is $175,000-$200,000 annually. The base salary and title will be determined based on skills, experience, scope, and market data. This role also participates in Invariant's discretionary bonus structure, which considers individual performance and client revenue impact.

In addition, our total rewards package includes:

- Annual discretionary bonus based on individual performance and that of the firm

- Commissions on new business development

- Robust medical, dental, and vision plans with employer HSA contributions

- Generous retirement matching

- Educational assistance

- Professional development assistance

- Unlimited time off

- Other benefits
