Security Systems Technician – Installation

Company Overview

With over 19 years of experience, Hays Electrical Services is a nationally recognized electrical contractor delivering high-quality, safe, and reliable electrical solutions across commercial, industrial, and specialty markets. Licensed in multiple states and trusted by leading general contractors, Hays is built on a foundation of safety, excellence, drive, communication, and client focus.

Our mission is simple: to make ourselves indispensable to our customers. We achieve this by investing in our people, continuously improving our processes, and delivering results that set the standard in the electrical contracting industry.

Position Summary

The Security Installation Technician installs, terminates, configures, and commissions electronic safety and security (ESS) systems on new construction and retrofit projects under Division 28 scopes — access control, IP video surveillance, intrusion detection, and intercom/entry systems.

Working as part of an installation crew under a Project Manager or Field Supervisor, the technician delivers clean, network-ready installations from construction documents through programming, commissioning, and client turnover.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install and mount security devices at project scale: card readers, controllers, electrified hardware, cameras, intrusion sensors, keypads, and intercom stations.

  • Install and terminate low voltage cabling and pathways per project specifications and industry standards.

  • Install, wire, and configure access control panels/controllers and head-end/server and network equipment.

  • Configure IP cameras and video management systems (VMS): addressing, storage, and camera commissioning.

  • Apply networking fundamentals — IP addressing, switches, PoE, and basic VLAN concepts — to bring devices online.

  • Integrate door hardware with electrified locks, REX, position switches, and fire alarm release where required.

  • Coordinate rough-in with the electrical prime, GC, door/hardware, and IT stakeholders.

  • Program, test, and commission access control, video, and intrusion systems end-to-end at turnover.

  • Read and work from floor plans, door schedules, device schedules, and riser diagrams.

  • Maintain red-lines, as-builts, test records, and closeout documentation.

  • Meet installation quality and production targets set by the PM/Field Supervisor.

  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.

Qualifications & SkillsRequired
  • 3+ years installing and commissioning access control, video surveillance, and/or intrusion systems on commercial projects.

  • Working knowledge of low voltage installation practices and industry standards.

  • Networking fundamentals: IP addressing, switching, PoE, and basic troubleshooting.

  • Ability to read and interpret floor plans, door schedules, and device schedules.

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role.

Preferred
  • Manufacturer certification/experience with one or more platforms (e.g., Lenel/S2, Genetec, Software House/C•CURE, Avigilon, Milestone, Brivo, Axis, DMP, Bosch).

  • Experience integrating door hardware and electrified locking systems.

  • Low voltage / alarm technician license where required by state or jurisdiction.

  • OSHA 10/30 certification.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a field-based role performed primarily at active construction jobsites and end-user facilities, with local/regional travel between sites. The employee must be able to walk construction sites and uneven terrain; climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, and aerial/scissor lifts; work in mechanical/electrical rooms, ceilings, and confined spaces; and stand, bend, kneel, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly. Work is performed with appropriate PPE. Must be able to detect, determine, distinguish, inspect, assess, and adjust focus, and distinguish colors for cable and conductor identification. A valid driver's license and clean driving record are required.
