Job Description

We are seeking a Robotics Software Engineer III to own the design and delivery of software subsystems for robotic automation systems. You will take on loosely defined technical tasks, work out the details, and deliver them independently from design through commissioning, working within the technical direction set for each project while building deep expertise in C#, robot motion, machine vision, and sensor integration.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design and delivery of complete software subsystems for robotic automation projects, such as robot communication, vision, or sensor integration, from design through deployment with minimal oversight.
  • Take loosely defined technical tasks, work out the requirements, interfaces, and acceptance criteria with the project team, estimate the effort for your subsystems, and raise risks early.
  • Design and develop components in C#, .NET, WPF, and MVVM within the project architecture, contribute to architecture decisions, and write unit and integration tests for your code.
  • Develop software and communication interfaces for Fanuc and other 6-axis industrial robots, including program control, I/O, data exchange, and coordination with external devices.
  • Design and build reusable libraries and APIs for cameras, laser profilometers, ultrasonic probes, PLCs, motor controllers, and digital I/O, following and extending established integration patterns.
  • Develop and optimize path planning, motion control, collision avoidance, and offline programming features, selecting and adapting algorithms to meet accuracy and cycle-time requirements and verifying them in simulation before running them on hardware.
  • Develop computer vision solutions using stereo vision, image processing, and 3D object localization, including camera-to-robot coordinate transformations and vision-guided corrections.
  • Develop and refine calibration procedures for robot, tool, camera, and workpiece frames, and measure the resulting accuracy.
  • Plan and run validation testing for your subsystems, analyze the results, and recommend improvements based on accuracy, cycle-time, and reliability data.
  • Perform rapid prototypes and feasibility studies on focused technical questions, and present findings and recommendations to the project team.
  • Commission and troubleshoot your subsystems on site with minimal support, lead root-cause analysis for issues in your area, and contribute to system-level troubleshooting.
  • Work within each cell's safety configuration and established safety practices, and verify that your software behaves correctly with safety functions and interlocks.
  • Participate actively in design and code reviews, and guide newer team members on the subsystems you own.
  • Communicate directly with customers on the technical details of your subsystems when needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 2 years in industrial robotics or automation.
  • Strong proficiency in C# and object-oriented design, with a track record of delivering production software.
  • Solid experience with .NET, Dependency Injection, WPF, and MVVM, including designing components within multi-module applications.
  • Proficiency with Visual Studio, Git, branching, unit testing, and code review practices.
  • Strong applied mathematics for robotics, including linear algebra, trigonometry, coordinate transformations, and robot kinematics fundamentals.
  • Hands-on experience with 6-axis industrial robots (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa, or similar), including robot frames, I/O, teach pendant operation, and robot-to-PC communication.
  • Experience delivering motion control, path planning, or collision avoidance features in working robotic systems.
  • Practical experience with machine vision and image processing tools such as OpenCV, Cognex, or Keyence, including camera-to-robot calibration.
  • Experience integrating sensors, PLCs, motor control systems, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Owned a major software subsystem on at least one delivered robotic or automation system through commissioning.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM, robotic simulation (such as FANUC ROBOGUIDE), or offline programming software is a plus.
  • Awareness of robot safety functions such as Fanuc DCS is a plus.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including presenting test results and discussing technical details with customers.

This position is a strong fit for an engineer who owns technical problems end to end, works through ambiguity without close direction, and wants to deepen their expertise in industrial robotics while solving challenging manufacturing and inspection problems.
