DEPARTMENT: Billing
DAYS: Monday – Friday
HOURS: 8am – 5pm
JOB SUMMARY: Verify medical and dental insurances prior to patient appointments. Contact patients regarding any financial information about their appointment.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Contact insurance companies daily to verify medical and/or dental benefits for any upcoming new or established patient appointments.
- Completely and accurately fill out a “Patient Insurance Verification Form”.
- Notify patients of any financial obligations or amounts due, prior to their appointment.
- Contact patients if their office visit benefits are not covered by their insurance and review available options for proceeding with the scheduled appointment.
- Obtain a referral or authorization for any appointments that require one, per the patient’s insurance.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA guidelines.
- Attend all staff meetings.
- Communicate professionally with insurance companies and patients.
- Maintain required billing records, reports, and files.
- Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma.
- College courses/degree in billing is a plus
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Up to two years’ experience in a medical or dental office.
- Comprehension of health insurance plans.
- Experience with using online portals to look up patient insurance information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledgeable with all levels of digital communication and exploration.
PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS:
Work may require sitting for long periods of time, and also stooping, bending and stretching. Position requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, operate a computer, telephone, calculator, copier, and other office equipment as necessary. Employee must have normal range of hearing and eyesight. Position also requires viewing computer screens and typing for long periods of time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an office setting and involves constant verbal communication with patients and insurance companies. The employee must be comfortable discussing money with patients. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Option of occasional work from home once training is complete.
