Job Description

Description:

The UI/UX Designer shapes how mission analysts and decision-makers experience the team's analytic products. They lead user research, interaction and visual design, and accessibility for dashboards, internal tools, and case-management interfaces. They work alongside data scientists and engineers to ensure analytic outputs are clear, accessible, and Section 508-compliant.

  • Lead user research with mission analysts and stakeholders — interviews, contextual inquiry, usability testing — to inform design decisions.
  • Translate research and requirements into user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity designs.
  • Develop and document UI standards, design tokens, and component libraries to drive consistency across analytic products
  • Proactively address Section 508 compliance (36 CFR 1194.21, 1194.22, 1194.31, 1194.41) — color contrast, keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, alt text, and accessible data visualization.
  • Partner with data scientists to design effective visualizations of complex mission data, including analytic and decision-support dashboards.
  • Participate in software project lifecycle activities to ensure operational and performance requirements are met.
  • Conduct accessibility testing using federally-approved methods and tools, in alignment with the customer's accessibility office.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Fine Arts, User Interface Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related discipline.
  • Two (2)+ years of user interface / user experience design experience.
  • Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design work — research, ideation, prototyping, testing, and shipped product.
  • Working knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG accessibility standards.
  • Strong written and visual communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing data-rich applications, analytic dashboards, or case-management tools.
  • Familiarity with the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS).
  • Front-end implementation skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React) for prototyping.
  • Experience working with screen-reader and accessibility testing tools (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, axe, WAVE, ANDI).
  • Experience designing for federal or other regulated environments.
Tools & Technologies
  • Design: Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Prototyping & handoff: Figma, ProtoPie, Zeplin, Storybook.
  • Research & testing: Maze, UserTesting, Lookback, Optimal Workshop, Dovetail.
  • Accessibility: axe, WAVE, ANDI, NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver; USWDS.
  • Front-end (a plus): HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Tailwind.
Clearance & Suitability

U.S. Citizenship required. Candidates must currently possess or be able to favorably pass a five (5) year federal background investigation prior to start.
