Job Description

Mercer Street Friends is seeking a detail-oriented Full-Time Senior Accountant to support the organization's financial operations, with a particular focus on grant accounting, government funding, compliance reporting, and nonprofit fund accounting. This position works closely with the Director of Finance to ensure accurate management of restricted funds, preparation of grant reports, and compliance with federal, state, local, and private funding requirements.


Job Summary: Provides financial and grant-related accounting support by researching accounting data, preparing financial and compliance reports, and ensuring the accurate management of restricted and government-funded resources. Protects organizational assets through adherence to financial policies, internal controls, grant requirements, reporting systems, and federal, state, and local regulations. Supports the administration of government and private grants through financial monitoring, compliance reporting, reconciliation, and fund accounting activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage accounting activities related to government and private grants.

  • Prepare financial reports, reimbursement requests, and supporting documentation for funding agencies.

  • Monitor restricted funds and grant expenditures to ensure compliance with funding requirements.

  • Reconcile grant expenses, bank accounts, and general ledger accounts.

  • Support month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Assist with annual audits, grant monitoring reviews, and compliance reporting.

  • Collaborate with program leaders to monitor grant budgets and funding utilization


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, grant-funded, or government-funded environment.

  • Experience managing government grants, restricted funds, and compliance reporting requirements.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, and grant accounting principles.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software.

  • Experience preparing grant financial reports and supporting audits preferred


Preferred Experience:

Candidates with significant experience in government grant management, restricted fund accounting, grant compliance, and regulatory reporting will receive consideration.
