Job Description
POSITION: Apprentice Water Dist. & WW Collections Operator I
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection
JOB OBJECTIVE: Perform operation and maintenance tasks on the water distribution system and wastewater collection system in order to provide superior quality water and wastewater services to the customer. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with on-call requirements.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Knowledge and experience with underground utilities or plumbing is helpful.
• Knowledge and experience with operating heavy equipment is helpful.
• Must have good verbal communication skills and ability to work well with the public.
• Ability to obtain the Water Distribution Certification within 18 months of employment and the Wastewater Collection Certification within 30 months of employment.
• A valid MD Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one within twelve months of hire date.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: A high school diploma or equivalent
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Job involves entering and working in permit required confined spaces, driving, operation of heavy equipment, lifting, bending, climbing and digging in all weather conditions
• Must be able to pass DOT physical
• Must have sufficient pulmonary function to wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
• Must wear proper PPE at all times

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Investigate and troubleshoot service complaints to ensure quality water and wastewater service.
• Communicate with customers about problems with their service and solutions
• Repair water mains, services, hydrants and valves, sewer mains, manholes, service laterals and valves through the proper installation of repair clamps, valve packing, and other associated repair parts.
• Install water service including the corporation at the main, the service piping, the meter valves, the meter vault and the water meter ready for customer connection.
• Construct new mains including the proper installation of mechanical joint fittings (tees, valves, bends, reducers, etc.), valve boxes, and fire hydrants.
• Install sewer services including the mainline cut-in, the sewer service pipe, and fittings as required.
• Install sewer manhole castings, properly aligned and at proper elevation.
• Install sewer repair boots (Fernco couplings).
• Operate assigned equipment including air compressor, jackhammer, road saws, portable pumps, portable generator, small dump truck, pickup truck, backhoe, and sewer jetting machine.
• Operate, maintain, and repair valves and fire hydrants.
• Inspect sewer mains for proper flow and determine location of stoppages.
• Set up proper signage and traffic control devices to ensure job site safety while performing work in roadways.
• Read water distribution and wastewater collection maps and determine valves required to isolate in order to facilitate maintenance / repairs.
• Collect samples of water and wastewater and conduct field analyses using test kits
• Conduct inspections of grease interceptors / traps, prepare inspection reports and communicate with customers regarding findings of the inspections.
• Conduct inspections of existing sewer manholes and pipes
• Perform maintenance to tools and equipment to ensure they are in good condition and operating order,
• Assist in Emergency Conditions in all departments as directed by appropriate supervisor.
• Regular, reliable attendance is a requirement of this job.
