Job Title: Machining Applications Engineer
Location: Mooresville, IN
Job Type: Full time
Position Summary
The Machining Applications Engineer serves as the technical bridge between our sales team, project managers, and the shop floor on machining work. This position owns the technical side of machining quotes, including methods, cycle times, tooling, and fixturing, and ensures that what we quote matches the realities of running the job. The goal of this role is to help us quote faster, quote more accurately, and drive growth in the machining side of our business. The ideal candidate brings deep hands-on machining experience, thinks like a machinist, and communicates like an engineer.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with the sales team to review RFQs, prints, and 3D models and develop accurate, timely machining quotes, including process routing, cycle times, tooling, fixturing, material, and outside services.
- Support project managers on machining-heavy opportunities by providing machining methods, estimates, and manufacturability input.
- Collaborate with machinists, programmers, and shop leadership to verify that quoted times and methods match actual run results and close the gap where they differ.
- Conduct time studies and analyze actual vs. estimated hours to continuously improve quoting standards.
- Build and maintain standard quoting data, such as cycle-time references, machine capabilities, and feeds and speeds, to speed up the quoting process.
- Use Mastercam to evaluate toolpaths, simulate programs, and estimate cycle times during the quoting process.
- Provide design-for-manufacturability (DFM) feedback to customers and internal teams to reduce costs and lead time.
- Recommend fixturing, work holding, and tooling approaches for new work and support a clean handoff from quote to production.
- Participate in customer calls and visits as needed to discuss technical requirements and machining approach.
- Identify and develop opportunities to apply AI and automation to quoting, estimating, and time-study processes.
- Track quote turnaround and quoted vs. actual performance on machining jobs and report trends to leadership.
- Work with the Quality Management Representative (QMR) to maintain ISO compliance across all processes.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma required; Engineering degree, machining/manufacturing technology certificate, or equivalent professional experience preferred.
- Experience: 5+ years of direct, hands-on CNC machining experience required, including programming, setup, and operation of mills and/or lathes. Quoting, estimating, or manufacturing engineering experience strongly preferred.
- Skills:
- Mastercam experience is strongly preferred. Candidates experienced in other CAM software will be required to complete Mastercam training.
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including GD&T.
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks or similar CAD software, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
- Thorough understanding of machining processes, cutting tools, work holding, feeds and speeds, and the drivers of cycle time.
- Experience developing or using AI or software tools for quoting, estimating, or time studies is a big plus.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work effectively with customers, sales, and the shop floor.
- Analytical mindset and comfort working with data to compare estimated vs. actual performance.
- Effective time management and organizational skills to handle multiple quotes and deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Credibility on the shop floor and a collaborative approach to working with sales, project management, and production teams.
- Attention to detail for maintaining accurate quotes, records, and estimates.
