Job Description:
The City of Chesapeake is excited to offer meaningful summer employment opportunities through our Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) from July 1, 2026, through September 4, 2026. This program is designed to provide Chesapeake residents ages 16 through 19 with valuable hands on work experience while learning about careers in local government and public service.

Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside City employees in a supportive and team oriented environment while building workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, customer service, professionalism, and time management.

Safety and Security Division
Participants may assist with:
  • Supporting various safety and physical security projects across the City
  • Creating and updating spreadsheets and project tracking data
  • Assisting with documentation related to completed and upcoming security projects
  • Supporting efforts to develop standardized physical security practices and procedures
  • Assisting with the development of training materials and employee safety resources
  • Helping create training videos related to City safety initiatives, including Safety Connect and Work Alone Devices
  • Providing general administrative and project support to division staff
Ideal candidates are organized, dependable, comfortable using computers, willing to learn, and interested in public safety, technology, project management, or government operations.

Operations Division
Participants may assist with and observe:
  • Ride along experiences with Police Patrol Aides
  • Daily public safety and community support operations
  • Administrative and support activities related to patrol functions
  • Customer service and community engagement efforts
  • General operational support tasks as assigned
This assignment is designed to provide participants with firsthand exposure to the role of Police Patrol Aides and demonstrate how the position can serve as a pathway to future careers in law enforcement and public safety.

Animal Services Division
Participants may assist with:
  • Feeding, watering, grooming, and providing general care for shelter animals
  • Cleaning and maintaining cages, kennels, and animal areas
  • Assisting with animal intakes and routine record keeping
  • Observing daily animal health checks and care procedures
  • Assisting staff with adoption support and customer service
  • Supporting general shelter operations and facility upkeep

Ideal candidates should be comfortable working around animals, willing to learn, dependable, and interested in animal care or public service careers.


Required Qualifications:
Students participating in the Summer Youth Employment Program will be responsible for:
  • Providing their own transportation to and from work,
  • Arriving at the work site at the time designated by the work site supervisor.
  • Performing the tasks assigned by the supervisor in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrating honesty, punctuality, courtesy, a cooperative attitude, appropriate dress, and a willingness to learn.
  • Conforming to the guidelines of the work site.
