Description
The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University has an opening for a research professional in evolutionary biology and microbiome science appointed at the rank of Professional Specialist. The position provides scientific leadership for computational genomics and metagenomics within the Moeller Laboratory. Working under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, the position leads computational research projects from conceptual development through analysis, interpretation, and dissemination; develops and implements analytical and statistical methodologies; coordinates research activities involving students, postdoctoral researchers, and collaborators; and exercises substantial independent scientific judgment in determining approaches and resolving complex research problems. The position is responsible for translating biological questions into rigorous computational research strategies and for communicating research findings.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
(1) development and implementation of computational workflows for genome-resolved metagenomic, comparative-genomic, and population-genomic analyses, including strain-, gene-, and allele-level analyses of microbial communities;
(2) management, quality control, organization, and long-term stewardship of large-scale DNA, RNA, and other omics datasets and associated computational workflows;
(3) interpretation and communication of results, including leadership of and contributions to grant proposals and manuscripts (e.g., research articles); and
(4) coordination of research activities within the laboratory, including development and documentation of computational protocols and training and technical guidance for laboratory members.
The position is available for one year, with a possibility for renewal contingent on meeting all the requirements. This position is subject to the University's background check policy. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of an H-1B visa requiring consular processing.
Qualifications
Qualifications include a PhD in biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, computational biology, evolutionary biology, genomics, or a related field, or an advanced degree with equivalent combination of advanced training and relevant research experience. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in microbiome or genomic research, quantitative analysis of large sequencing datasets, and the development or implementation of reproducible computational workflows. Experience with experimental microbiology, mammalian microbiome studies, and management of large-scale research datasets is preferred.
Specific desired qualifications include:
1. Advanced expertise in computational genomics, metagenomics, population genetics, bioinformatics, or related quantitative approaches.
2. Demonstrated ability to lead complex scientific research projects from conceptual development through analysis, interpretation, and dissemination.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop or substantially adapt computational and statistical methodologies for novel research problems.
4. Advanced proficiency in scientific programming and reproducible computational research, including languages such as Python, R, Bash, and workflow-management systems.
5. Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate analytical alternatives and make scientific and methodological decisions affecting project direction.
6. Strong record of scientific writing and communication, including preparation of manuscripts, figures, research presentations, and components of grant proposals.
7. Ability to coordinate the work of multiple research contributors and provide scientific guidance and mentorship to students and researchers.
8. Excellent project-management, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
