Business Development Manager
About the Role
We're looking for a Business Development Manager to own and grow our Northern California territory, home to one of the most dynamic life sciences markets in the world. You'll find and win new enterprise customers across pharma, biotech, and academia, grow our footprint in existing accounts, and bring in our scientific and commercial experts to deliver solutions that accelerate drug discovery.
This role is a great fit for a self-driven hunter who loves the full sales cycle, speaks the language of scientists and procurement teams alike, and wants the freedom of a remote role with the impact of owning a high-potential territory.
What You'll Do
Build Your Territory
- Prospect and develop new business across the Northern California life sciences market, from Bay Area biotech hubs to leading academic institutions
- Lead with Computational Chemistry solutions for large pharma, biotech, and academic organizations, and Procurement Solutions for mid-sized pharma and biotech
- Generate opportunities through cold outreach, email campaigns, LinkedIn, networking, and industry conferences
- Follow up on qualified leads from our Sales Enablement team and account analysis
Win New Business
- Build and manage a healthy pipeline, moving qualified leads through to close
- Meet or exceed revenue goals by executing territory plans and strategic account activities
- Coordinate customer meetings and technical discussions with senior commercial leaders and subject matter experts
Be a Trusted Advisor
- Build strong relationships with scientific and procurement stakeholders
- Understand each customer's goals and recommend solutions that fit
- Uncover new contacts and growth opportunities within existing accounts
- Gather customer feedback to improve the customer experience and make us easier to do business with
Shape Our Market Strategy
- Research key organizations, industry trends, and emerging opportunities
- Identify and map Key Opinion Leaders, and partner with our Scientific Sales team on a global KOL strategy
- Share insights on competitors, buying trends, and pricing to inform commercial strategy
Collaborate and Lead
- Partner with Strategic Account Management, Client Services, Finance, IT, Operations, and Scientific Sales to support onboarding and long-term customer success
- Provide regular pipeline updates, forecasts, and activity reports to leadership
- Share your expertise by mentoring junior sales team members
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
What You Bring
- 3+ years of full-cycle sales experience, ideally in life sciences, biotech, pharma, or a related scientific field
- A proven track record of prospecting, qualifying, and closing new business
- Experience managing a pipeline and consistently hitting sales targets
- Hands-on experience with CRM systems such as Salesforce or NetSuite
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Strong negotiation, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to tailor your message to scientists, executives, and procurement teams
- Comfort navigating complex organizations and identifying decision-makers
- Familiarity with consultative selling and pipeline management methods
- A self-motivated, results-driven mindset and openness to coaching and feedback
- Preferred: a Master's or Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related discipline (or equivalent experience), and experience selling to pharma, biotech, or academic organizations
Working Environment
This is a remote position based in the Greater Sacramento area, giving you easy access to Sacramento International Airport and Bay Area customers. Your schedule will flex with business needs, including customer meetings and communication across time zones.
Travel
This role requires regular travel within your territory for customer visits, plus domestic and international travel (including the U.S. and Europe) for conferences, training, company events, and visits to eMolecules offices.
