Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer – Market Data based in Italy.
Join an innovative technology environment transforming how institutions access and understand blockchain and financial market data. In this senior individual contributor role, you will design and build a next-generation market data platform delivering reliable, real-time feeds and historical datasets to institutional customers. You will take technical ownership of distributed systems responsible for ingesting, processing, normalising, storing, and delivering high-quality data across multiple sources. Working at the intersection of backend engineering, streaming infrastructure, and financial data, you will help shape critical architectural decisions around performance, correctness, reliability, and scalability. You will also mentor engineers, influence technical direction across teams, and drive continuous improvements to production systems. In a remote-first, international engineering team, you will have the autonomy to solve complex challenges and use AI-assisted development to accelerate delivery while maintaining exceptional engineering standards.
- Design, develop, and operate distributed backend systems for ingesting, normalising, processing, storing, and delivering real-time market data from blockchain networks and other relevant financial data sources.
- Build and maintain robust streaming infrastructure that handles event ordering, timestamps, duplicate records, replay, missing data, and recovery, including blockchain reorganisations and transaction finality where relevant.
- Develop reliable client-facing data feeds and APIs with clearly defined delivery guarantees, evolving schemas, appropriate access controls, and predictable performance under heavy workloads or when consumers fall behind.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to define and improve reference data models, historical data capture, and the integration of new data sources and capabilities.
- Establish and continuously improve service-level objectives (SLOs) and data quality metrics, monitoring latency, freshness, completeness, and correctness across the platform.
- Independently investigate production issues, conduct thorough root cause analyses, and implement durable fixes that improve system resilience, recovery, and operational efficiency.
- Own services throughout their lifecycle, from technical design and implementation to deployment, monitoring, production support, and participation in the team's on-call rotation.
- Integrate AI-assisted development tools throughout the engineering workflow, using them to explore architectural options, implement changes, generate tests, investigate failures, and improve documentation while maintaining strong technical oversight.
- Develop repeatable AI-assisted engineering practices, share effective workflows with colleagues, and contribute to continuous improvements in development productivity and quality.
- Lead technical decisions across team boundaries, document architectural proposals clearly, and help translate ambiguous requirements into pragmatic designs and production-ready solutions.
- Mentor engineers through implementation, code reviews, and technical discussions, enabling the team to deliver complex projects with high standards of reliability and maintainability.
- Extensive experience building and operating distributed backend systems or data services with demanding reliability, scalability, and performance requirements, including the ability to diagnose failures across service and data boundaries.
- Strong expertise in real-time streaming systems, including concurrency, state management, backpressure, event processing, and recovery mechanisms.
- A deep understanding of data correctness and integrity, including timestamp handling, numerical precision, schema evolution, data corrections, event ordering, and consistency across distributed systems.
- Strong computer science fundamentals and advanced backend engineering skills, with experience in languages such as Rust, Go, or comparable programming languages.
- Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous technical and business requirements into clear architectural designs, deliverable work, and robust production services.
- Experience taking end-to-end ownership of software systems, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and ongoing operational improvements.
- Strong technical leadership skills, with the ability to influence architectural decisions across teams, mentor other engineers, and guide implementation without relying solely on formal management authority.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document complex technical concepts and collaborate effectively with colleagues in a distributed, remote-first environment.
- Experience working with financial or market data at a financial institution or in a comparable data-intensive environment is valuable.
- Familiarity with blockchain data and indexing, including EVM-compatible networks or Solana, is a plus.
- Experience with reference data systems, including instrument and entity master data, identifier mapping, effective-dated records, tokenised assets, or fund data, is advantageous.
- Experience working at a company where data is the core product is also beneficial.
- A strong sense of ownership, sound engineering judgement, and a proactive approach to using AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve productivity without compromising reliability or quality.
- Competitive salary and equity: A compensation package designed to be highly competitive within the industry, with both salary and equity positioned among the top 25% of comparable companies.
- Employee-friendly equity terms: An employee equity scheme offering a heavily discounted exercise price, approximately 90% below the standard reference price, and a 10-year exercise window.
- Generous paid time off: Five weeks of annual leave, in addition to local public holidays, which can be adjusted to suit your needs.
- Fully remote working: Work remotely within a distributed international team, with flexible hours and the freedom to organise your own working day.
- Flexible collaboration: A healthy balance of asynchronous and synchronous communication, with an emphasis on focused work and minimising unnecessary meetings.
- Comprehensive healthcare: Private medical insurance, dental coverage, and vision care as standard benefits.
- Paid parental leave: 16 weeks of fully paid leave for primary caregivers and six weeks for secondary caregivers, plus a two-week phased return to work on a part-time schedule at full pay.
- Quarterly company and team offsites: Opportunities to meet colleagues in person, collaborate, and build relationships at gatherings in exciting locations.
- Annual travel allowance: Funding to travel and work alongside colleagues or teams for several days each year.
- Home office support: An allowance to create a comfortable and productive home-working environment, or company-paid access to a local coworking desk.
- Professional growth: Work alongside talented engineers on technically challenging projects that shape the future of blockchain and financial data infrastructure.
- Inclusive culture: Join a team committed to diversity, inclusion, and creating an environment where people with different backgrounds and perspectives can thrive.
