Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Strategic Coordination Senior Director, Tribal Health Programs reports to and supports the Vice President of THP in the strategic implementation of division priorities, funding development, evaluation activities, and cross-program and divisional alignment.
This position serves as a senior-level, cross-functional leader focused on strengthening communication and collaboration, driving funding growth, and ensuring operational alignment across THP initiatives as well as with select NIHB divisional initiatives external to THP. Operating primarily as a high-level strategic contributor rather than a personnel manager, this role works closely with internal project teams, Tribal partners, federal agencies, and external stakeholders to advance NIHB’s mission and elevate Tribal public health priorities.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Coordination and Alignment
•Support implementation of THP priorities and strategic goals established by the Vice President.
•Strengthen coordination, communication, and resource-sharing across THP projects and portfolios.
•Facilitate cross-THP department and NIHB division collaboration, planning, and operational alignment efforts.
•Identify operational gaps, emerging public health opportunities, coordination efficiencies, and providing actionable recommendations to leadership and team members, where appropriate.
•Support tracking and reporting of strategic initiatives, programmatic deliverables, and project timelines.

Funding Development and Partnerships
•Proactively identify and communicate funding opportunities aligned with NIHB organizational priorities.
•Lead and support grant writing, proposal development, and funding applications.
•Develop highly competitive scopes of work, project narratives, and supporting materials for grants and cooperative agreements.
•Cultivate and support partnership development with Tribes, Tribal organizations, philanthropic foundations, and federal agencies, in support of and in coordination with requisite NIHB divisions.

Tribal Public Health Expertise
•Serve as an internal and external subject matter expert on Tribal public health systems and Indigenous health priorities
•Support presentations and webinars, provide technical assistance, and represent NIHB or support staff members at national engagement activities
•Communicate effectively and diplomatically with Tribal leaders, partners, and stakeholders on public health topics
•Monitor and analyze emerging public health trends, policies, and funding mechanisms affecting Tribal Nations

Evaluation and Organizational Support
•Drive the coordination of evaluation, reporting, and impact measurement activities across THP projects
•Guide and assist project teams in identifying measurable outcomes, performance metrics, and reporting frameworks
•Strengthen the development of comprehensive reporting deliverables, executive summaries, and funding-related metrics
•Champion data-informed planning and continuous quality improvement efforts within THP and in coordination with NIHB divisions, where appropriate.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
•Doctorate in Public Health, Public Administration, Social Work, Healthcare Administration, Indigenous Studies, Evaluation, or related field required
•Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in Tribal public health, healthcare, nonprofit leadership, grant management, evaluation, or related fields
•Deep understanding of Tribal sovereignty, Tribal public health systems, and Indigenous health priorities with requisite experience to illustrate such understanding
•Proven track record in successful grant writing, funding development, and partnership coordination in relation to public health initiatives
•Exceptional written, verbal, organizational, and relationship-building skills
•Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex priorities and work collaboratively across diverse teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
•Direct experience working within Tribal Nations, Indian Health Bords, or national Tribal organizations
•Applied knowledge of federal funding systems and agencies, including but not limited to CDC, IHS, SAMHSA, and HRSA
•Advanced experience with public health evaluation, ROI/impact reporting, and quality improvement activities
•Strong understanding of Indigenous data sovereignty and culturally grounded public health frameworks

SUPERVISORY SKILLS
This position is primarily focused on coordination, partnership development, funding support, evaluation activities, and strategic implementation across THP and with other NIHB Divisions. The position will serve as an individual contributing director who leads initiatives and cross collaborative work rather than direct supervision of personnel. The position may provide project guidance and strategic mentorship to fellow staff members and project leads. The position does not hold primary administrative supervisory responsibility duties (e.g., payroll, formal performance evaluations) over THP staff members, unless delegated by the THP Vice President, if warranted to support the NIHB mission.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position operates in a professional office environment [or remote capacity] and requires the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced setting. The role requires occasional travel to Tribal meetings, regional conferences, site visits, and national convenings and the ability to present, where appropriate to support the NIHB mission. Standard physical requirements apply, including prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. The role requires the ability to manage competing priorities and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

COMPENSATION AND WORK LOCATION
This position is based in the Washington, DC Metro area. However, fully remote candidates will be considered.
