Job Description

Purpose:

Perform the duties required to address the educational and behavioral needs of students participating in the special education program, implement individualized interventions as part of a student’s behavior plan, engage students in reviewing material previously introduced by classroom teacher under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher, assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task, provides support and individualized instruction at the student's developmental level for functional skills, utilizes direct teaching techniques as outlined

within the student’s IEP and/or Behavior Plan and management of behavioral challenges exhibited by students in the special education setting. The Lead Chapter 33 Ed Tech will also review incident documentation, provide feedback to ensure that the documentation is clear, scheduled and facilitate incident debriefs with classroom staff and finalize incident documentation.

Job Duties / Essential Functions

  1. Provide 1:1 or small group support to students in the special education setting.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency with the basic tenets of Applied Behavior Analysis (i.e. proactive strategies, reinforcement, appropriate response to behavior, skills teaching) as it relates to individual student programs and behavioral interventions.
  3. Demonstrate ability to work in a collaborative and professional manner with all related service providers and implement

interventions congruent with the related service provider’s direction.

  • Implementation of individualized interventions as outlined in the student’s behavior plan.
  • Provide behavior support and direct teaching to students to promote skill acquisition of functional and academic goals as outlined in the student’s Individualized Education Plan.
  • Accurate and timely completion of required documentation (e.g. data collection, progress notes, incident reports, etc.)
  • Assist in the preparation of classroom materials and class management functions.
  • Review material previously introduced by classroom teacher under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher to reinforce prior learning.
  • Assist students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability
  • to participate in school or learning activities.

  • Attend and participate in professional development, clinical supervision and all other meetings as assigned by the site coordinator and/or Education Supervisor.
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with multiple service providers (Speech, OT, PT, BCBA, etc.).
  • Schedule and facilitate incident debriefs with classroom staff the day of the incident or the next school day as outlined within Chapter 33 Regulations.
  • Document the staff debrief as part of the incident.
  • Review and provide feedback regarding incident documentation.
  • Finalize incident reports within 6 days of the incident so that the incident is sent to the LEA and Parent/Guardian within 7 days of the incident as outlined within Chapter 33 Regulations.
  • Read and comply with KidsPeace policies, procedures and related information provided by KidsPeace Leadership.
  • Other job duties assigned by supervisor.
  • Competencies:

    1. Working knowledge of child development, disabilities, family systems and special education methods.
    2. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
    3. Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
    4. Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing.
    5. Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.
    6. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), as well the ability to demonstrate these principles to others.
    7. Have the ability and composure to manage moderate to severe problem behavior(s) exhibited by the student in accordance

    to the student’s behavior plan.

  • Ability to support students in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings (e.g. classroom, playground, fieldtrip location etc…)
  • Understands and supports the overall goals and objectives of the KidsPeace philosophy, vision, and mission.
  • Services shall be performed in accordance with the requirements of State and National accrediting and licensing bodies, and shall be consistent with sound and established principles of care.
  • All other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Qualifications (Education, Training and Experiences)

    1. Obtain and maintain Educational Technician Certification from the Maine Department of Education.
    2. Must pass all clearances as required by the Department of Education, DHHS & OCFS.
    3. Experience working with students in a special education setting with emotional and/or behavioral health needs.

    1. Must have ability to sit, stand for extended periods of time.
    2. Must have the ability to balance, climb, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, kneel, lift, pull, push, stoop, and reach above shoulder level.
    3. Must have the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
    4. Must be able to speak, read, and write in English proficiently.
    5. Must be fully trained and certified in current KidsPeace approved restraint methodology and have the ability to fully participate in all aspects of restraint procedures on clients who may weigh in excess of 250 pounds and are verbally or physically threatening or otherwise presenting a threat to themselves or others.
