Position Summary

Zachry Construction is seeking an experienced Lead Estimator to coordinate and oversee the estimating team in preparing accurate and competitive bids for heavy highway and infrastructure projects. This role will be responsible for developing bid strategies, leading the entire estimating process from start to finish, and ensuring cost accuracy and budget control throughout the preconstruction phase. The Lead Estimator will also mentor and guide other estimators, ensuring the delivery of high-quality work and continuous team development.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and coordinate the estimating team throughout the bidding and preconstruction process.
  • Develop bid strategies and review project plans and specifications to ensure complete understanding of project scope.
  • Delegate estimating assignments and review all estimates for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and evaluate self-perform and subcontractor cost estimates for multiple disciplines, including structures, bridges, underground utilities, earthwork, and concrete paving.
  • Develop thorough, detailed, and timely estimates based on project data and cost history.
  • Conduct site visits to assess conditions, restrictions, and logistics that may impact project costs.
  • Review historical data, productivity analysis, and subcontractor performance reports to refine cost projections.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to solicit pricing and confirm project details.
  • Build and maintain estimates within Hard Dollar and ensure proper cost allocation within pay items.
  • Develop preliminary project schedules using Primavera P6.
  • Collaborate with project teams to finalize bid submissions and ensure consistency with company standards.
  • Cross-train estimators in multiple disciplines and prepare senior team members for future leadership and field opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Estimating Manager or Director of Preconstruction.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum of 10 years of estimating experience in heavy/highway construction projects $50M and above.
  • Proven experience leading an estimating team on large-scale civil or infrastructure projects.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline preferred.
  • Prior field operations experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of all phases of heavy civil construction including structures, bridges, earthwork, utilities, and paving.
  • Proficiency with Hard Dollar and Primavera P6 required; familiarity with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, MicroStation, HCSS (Heavy Bid), and Terra Model preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time-management skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and other project management tools.
  • Ability to mentor and develop team members to support a culture of excellence and growth.
