JOB TITLE: Registered Nurse – EKG Stress Lab
DEPARTMENT: EKG/Cardiopulmonary
REPORTS TO: Cardiopulmonary Director
JOB SUMMARY
Provides nursing care for cardiovascular patients in the Stress Lab. Attends required in-service, yearly education day and mandatory departmental meetings. Participates in the collection of data for QI. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies. Practices good communication between departments, with physicians, each other and the Department Director.
The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status. They must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/department's policies and procedures.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Current Wyoming Registered Nurse License, Bachelor of Nursing preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Previous Stress Testing experience preferred. Minimum of one to two years in Critical Care or Emergency Department or three years of clinical nursing in a medical or surgical telemetry unit.
SKILLS
- Must possess a high degree of confidentiality in all matters with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions.
- Knowledge of Critical Care nursing principles and the nursing process.
- Knowledge of aseptic technique and infection control principles.
- Able to perform effectively in highly stressful situations.
- Must be well motivated, organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Must be able to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Effective computer and keyboarding skills.
- Must have ability to learn and use Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Outlook.
- Ability to learn new computer software applications.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
BLS and ACLS required (AHA).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Stress test scheduling coordination with radiology.
- Stress test monitoring per protocol.
- Recognize cardiac arrhythmias and intervene per provider orders, protocol or ACLS.
- IV/Port access for stress test patients as well as assistance in radiology and laboratory as needed.
- Operate equipment: IV pump, Stress testing equipment (treadmill & monitoring system).
- Prepare, monitor and administer medications during a stress test procedure.
- Assess the patient’s learning needs. Educate the patient and family regarding stress tests.
- Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity.
- Maintain accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient history, condition, vital signs, treatment, response to intervention, and change of status.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
- Follow the standard for infection control: hand washing, protective eyewear, mask, gown, gloves, head cover, and shoe cover, as appropriate. Proper disposal of contaminated items and the use of isolation.
- Participate in monthly outdating of medications and supplies and checking of crash cart. Check, order and stock supplies according to par level.
- Enter orders into the computer.
- Participate in chart review. Collect data for QI.
- Attend mandatory yearly education day, monthly mandatory staff meetings, and mandatory in-service.
- Enhance professional growth by attending educational opportunities pertaining to Cardiology.
- Initiate and coordinate a Code Blue.
- Behave in a professional manner and maintain good interpersonal relationships with other staff, departments, managers, and physicians.
- Participate in orientation of new Stress Lab staff. Provide nursing students with opportunities to observe and learn.
- Ensure all work areas are kept clean, stocked, and ready for use.
- Work with other departments in coordinating smooth transfer of patients.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
