The Equipment Service Technician is responsible to perform semi-skilled work by servicing gasoline or diesel powered automotive, heavy construction and other power-driven equipment; and to perform general maintenance and minor repairs on a variety of City equipment.

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


Essential Duties:

Fuel, grease, and lubricate automobiles, trucks, and heavy automotive equipment; service batteries and other parts.

Perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment; perform routine repair work and report safety and other priority repair work to supervisor.

Change and repair tires and install and service batteries, spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts, and other simple mechanical parts.

Service equipment with fuel and oil; keep records of amounts used; assist in general maintenance and cleanliness of automotive shop area.

Perform service calls; make temporary repairs; pick up and deliver vehicles to outside garage; pick up parts; road test vehicles to ensure proper operation.

Assist mechanics in the performance of advanced mechanical repairs as required.

Requisition, issue, pick-up, and deliver automotive equipment parts and supplies.

Steam clean and wash motorized equipment.

Sweep and vacuum car interiors.


Wash windows, tighten body bolts, sweep, wash, and keep shop and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.

Marginal Functions:

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

Tools, materials, and procedures used in the repair and adjustment of automotive equipment.

Lubricating systems and oils, greases, and attachments used in lubricating automotive and related equipment.

Less-complex components of automotive equipment.

Safe work practices pertaining to areas of assignment.

Common automotive parts and supplies.

Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Ability to:

Perform semi-skilled mechanical work on a wide variety of equipment.

Perform manual labor that includes lifting and carrying heavy equipment.

Maintain and keep simple records, including shop and repair records.

Service automotive and heavy equipment according to City procedures.

Work independently with minimal supervision.

Perform minor mechanical work on City owned equipment.

Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill.

Interpret work orders and explain jobs to other employees.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, database applications, and fleet management systems.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
One year of increasingly responsible experience performing related automotive servicing work.

Training:
High School diploma or GED equivalency.

License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid Class B Commercial California driver’s license with specific endorsements, as assigned, is required within sixty (60) days of appointment.

Failure to obtain any of the required licenses/certificates within the prescribed time will result in release from probation.

Additional Requirements:
Possession of a complete set of mechanic hand tools through 1-1/4” and a toolbox.

Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent standing for long period of time; frequent bending and squatting. Lifting: frequent lifting up to 75 pounds; occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. Vision: constant use of overall vision. Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. May be required to wear ear protection or hear in noisy conditions. Emotional/ Psychological: frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: frequent exposure to loud noise; frequent exposure to chemicals, fumes, and other environmental substances.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a mechanical shop environment on a year-round basis and is subject to exposure to loud equipment and machinery. Some work may occur at remote locations. Positions may require varying shifts, overtime, and weekend work and travel is rare.
