This position assists members with loan applications and other AFCU product account openings. This position counsel’s members as to best AFCU product to meet their needs, inputs and verifies documentation into the loan or account system and processes approved loans. This position determines and reviews specific third party requirements in terms of title searches, flood documentation and property valuations for equity loans. This position provides customer service throughout the loan request/and or account opening process and is responsible for cross-selling other Allegacy products and services.

This position also reviews and underwrites loans that are outside of accepted loan approval guidelines for our financial centers, assuring consistency within the credit granting processes. The position also functions as ongoing support and assists in the training of new employees and those with identified training needs.

Nature and Scope

This position reports to the Manager of Retail Lending. This position provides needs based advice and counsel to members in respect to their borrowing needs while offering additional products that will assist AFCU in becoming the primary financial institution for our membership. This position must be thoroughly aware of all AFCU products and services along with the proper disclosures and regulations and ensure that they are properly communicated at loan or account closing.

The position exists to eliminate the need for higher-salaried loan officer positions in each financial center location by centralizing the lending expertise to assure consistency in loan underwriting standards. In this regard the position, more than any other in the credit union, has the responsibility of protecting the credit union from loss by making sound lending decisions. This position has the responsibility to understand and underwrite to real estate loan policies in multiple states. This position works directly with financial center, call center employees and the mortgage department providing underwriting guidance and approvals for loan requests outside of credit union approval guidelines. This position also works as a team with the other loan officers in their area to make sound lending decisions to ensure the profitability of the credit union. Each of these Consumer Loan Underwriters will take turns being responsible for the “gray loan” lending queue, where loans from the branches are placed for a decision when outside the specified lender’s parameters/authority.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Deliver exceptional member service to every member, every time by ensuring employees deliver consistently high quality service to both internal and external member that is in alignment with our Brand Culture.
  • Meet or exceed established service goals
  • Ensure thorough understanding of expectations and consistently exhibit Allegacy behaviors.
  • Interview applicants applying through remote channels to ascertain request and make appropriate product recommendation.
  • Process loan applications to ensure prompt examination of applicant’s credit worthiness to minimize risk to AFCU.
  • Make certain that loan closings are completed on a timely basis, and are consistent with AFCU policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that proper documentation is disclosed to applicant to comply with laws, regulations and policies that relate to credit union operations.
  • Underwriting home equity loan applications by reviewing credit, reviewing required third party documents, rendering loan decisions, ensuring collateral is sufficient and lien position perfected.
  • Recommend other credit union products (cross-sell) based on identified needs through the interview process. Typically 50% of this job’s requirements are cross selling.
  • Work within a team based environment with financial center and call center employees providing lending expertise to assure consistency in lending decisions that are outside of the standard loan approval guidelines.

  • Assist other departments throughout the credit union to grow membership and increase community awareness of AFCU.
  • Provide training for new hires as well as serve as support for those needing additional training.
  • Serve as an information source for the training department in order to keep training manuals current.
  • Incorporate AFCU performance attributes in daily work activities along with the willingness and ability to display a professional, courteous and helpful attitude to members (internal as well as external).
  • Provide service in a professional manner when dealing with automobile dealers and other product representatives outside the credit union. Discretion must be exercised at all times to preserve the member/loan officer confidentiality.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated successful sales performance that supports and promotes a sales and service culture within AFCU.
  • Demonstrated lending decision making ability including analyzing credit requests.
  • Ability to discuss, recommend and open all AFCU’s products and services.
  • Accuracy in handling complicated transactions.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, including problem solving for members.
  • Ability to conduct business in a professional manner, exercising personal discretion and independent judgment, while maintaining compliance with policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in respect to the member’s financial affairs.
Requirements:

Education and Experience

Two or more years experience in a risk-based lending environment.

Undergraduate degree in business or related degree preferred.

Demonstrated familiarity and proficiency with computers required.

Strong verbal and written communication

Reliability, financial responsibility and personal integrity

Accuracy in handling complicated financial transactions

Ability to conduct business in a professional manner, while maintaining compliance with polices, law and regulations

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Ability and experience to decision high risk loans while minimizing risk to the credit union.

Eligible to be registered as a Mortgage Loan Originator with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System.
