About This Position

Under limited supervision of the Supervisor, Fleet Services, assists in supporting daily operations and of the automotive and equipment repair facilities. Assures vehicle and equipment standards are maintained. Conducts replacement analysis on fleet vehicles and equipment. Maintains necessary requisitions for materials and services. Coordinates with vendors and internal departments. Performs the duties of the Supervisor in their absence.
Provides support of operations and management of the automotive and equipment facilities by:
  • Assists in planning, scheduling and preparing procedures for the preventive maintenance program.
  • Assists with analysis on fleet replacement vehicles and equipment. Provides replacement modeling based on established criteria and needs of FW operations.
  • Maintains fleet records within SAP and the automated fueling system, conducts material audits and necessary fleet reports weekly, monthly, annually, or as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining hard copy files at various fleet locations.
  • Assists subordinates as Senior Technician in the repair, testing and maintenance of automotive and construction equipment.
  • Conducts in-shop technical training and safety training as needed.
  • Determines the feasibility for the repair or replacement of automotive and construction equipment or assigned work.
  • Assists in specification development of FW vehicles and equipment in conjunction with using departments.
  • Assists obtaining replacement parts, and miscellaneous supplies.
  • Initiates and approves requisitions, specifications for shop equipment and other necessary fleet shop equipment and materials.
  • Receives and inspecting materials and new equipment to verify specifications.
  • Assists in the oversight and management of the State Inspection Program to include: ordering, issuing and maintaining inventory for Virginia State Inspection Stickers, maintaining updates on state safety manuals, insuring mechanics maintain state certification and maintaining required equipment needed to perform safety inspections and performing inspections.
  • Performs annual DEQ emissions compliance reports.
  • Performs DMV EZ-Fleet transactions for vehicle tagging, titling, and maintaining fleet records and material inventory.
  • Stays abreast with the latest industry information through trade journals, field representatives, fleet seminars and training opportunities.
  • Assists with developing the department budget.
  • Promotes safe shop practices, enforcing safety procedures and conducting safety meetings.
  • Performs other departmental duties to include; preparing vehicles and equipment for auction, conducting detailed analysis for fleet needs, interviewing for staff vacancies, maintaining fleet supplies and preparing necessary records and reports.
  • Participates in SAP testing as needed.
Performs highly skilled diagnostic and mechanical work on fleet assets by:
  • Diagnosing, repairing, servicing, inspecting, removing, disassembling, rebuilding, welding, adjusting, reinstalling and aligning components such as: engines, transmissions, brakes, clutches, radiators, electrical/electronic components, HVAC components, hydraulic system components, pumps, bearings, steering, suspension, axles, differentials, and sub systems on FW assets.
  • Performing general equipment care such as changing oils, filters, lubricating chassis, replacing belts, hoses, tires, and other maintenance needs.
  • Coordinating and making emergency repairs on vehicles and equipment in the field.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.

  • Graduation from high school or GED, supplemented by specialized training in automotive and equipment repair, and a minimum of six years progressively responsible hands-on experience in automotive and equipment repair and maintenance, including at least one-year experience in a lead capacity, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of automotive and equipment diagnostics and repair procedures.
  • Experience and knowledge of safety regulations and accident prevention practices.
  • Experience and knowledge of Virginia Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of tools and special equipment used to diagnose and repair vehicles and construction equipment.
  • Experience evaluating the most efficient and economical means of repair.
  • Experience prioritizing repairs of mission critical vehicles, off road equipment and various shop equipment.
  • Extensive working knowledge of the SAP ERP Fleet Program, electronic vehicle repair information systems, and electronic fuel management system.
  • Experience using test equipment and tools necessary for automotive and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of parts inventory and procurement procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer basics.
  • Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment. This position is also subject to random testing after hire.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with subordinates, vendors and the general public.
  • Possession of Virginia State Safety Inspection Certificate.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Class A Driver's License (CDL) and good driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a minimum of two (2) ASE automotive series certifications (a1-A8) and an EPA-approved certification for Automotive Air Conditioning Refrigerant recovery and recycling within one year.
  • Ability to work at any of the Fairfax Water locations.

  • Office, shop, and job site environments with exposure to noise, odors, heat, cold, dust, etc.
  • Ability to lift from ground to waist, various automotive and construction parts, up to 75lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders and steps.
  • Ability to perform manual physical labor that may include long periods of standing, bending, twisting, and stooping.
