Position Summary:

The Athletic Trainer/Program Coordinator for the Tactical Athlete Clinic (TAC) is responsible for planning and implementation of the TAC program, including overseeing its various components, ensuring the program objectives are met efficiently and effectively. The Athletic Trainer (AT) provides injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation services to public safety personnel, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency responders. The AT works to reduce musculoskeletal injuries, improve physical readiness, and support return-to-duty outcomes through evidence-based care, education, and close collaboration with medical providers, orthopedic service line leadership and Indiana State University. This position will work solely with tactical athletes at the stations in the community, at Union Health facilities, and Indiana State University (ISU) facilities. No clinic or sports game coverage required. The TAC program is a program offered and managed within Union Health’s Orthopedic Service Line Sports Medicine Section in partnership with Indiana State University. The Athletic Trainer/Program Coordinator will work collaboratively with Union Health’s sports medicine ISU team physicians.

Essential Job Duties:

Injury Prevention and Wellness

  • Develop and implement injury prevention programs tailored to the physical demands of public safety personnel.
  • Conduct movement screenings, ergonomic assessments, and functional fitness evaluations.
  • Educate personnel on proper lifting techniques, physical conditioning, hydration, recovery, and injury prevention.
  • Assist with wellness initiatives that promote physical readiness and long-term health.

Clinical Evaluation, Treatment, and Return to Duty

  • Evaluate acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries sustained during training or duty.
  • Provide immediate care and first aid when injuries occur during training exercises or physical testing.
  • Develop individualized treatment and rehabilitation programs for injured personnel.
  • Guide injured personnel through structured rehabilitation programs.
  • Monitor recovery progress and modify rehabilitation plans as needed.
  • Collaborate with physicians, physical therapists, and occupational health providers to coordinate care.
  • Assist with return-to-work or return-to-duty decisions through functional testing and documentation.

Physical Readiness and Support

  • Assist with fitness testing, physical agility testing, and recruit training programs.
  • Provide consultation on conditioning programs specific to the occupational tasks of public safety personnel.
  • Observe training sessions and provide recommendations to reduce injury risk.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate injury records, treatment notes, and rehabilitation progress reports.
  • Track injury trends and provide data to leadership to inform prevention strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with medical documentation standards, department policies, and applicable regulations.
  • Contributes to the plan of care through accurate reporting of patient/client information.
  • Maintains patient/client confidentiality

Collaboration and Program Development

  • Work closely with orthopedic service line and its partners in program evaluation and management.
  • Participate as a Preceptor to new employees and students. Part of the role requires supervising students from multiple disciplines.
  • Assist in developing policies and procedures related to injury management and prevention.
  • Participate in departmental training sessions and safety briefings.
  • Uses effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development. Completes annual mandatory continuing education requirements as applicable.
  • Demonstrates professional conduct and positive behaviors: Courteous, cooperative, and supportive of co-workers and patients; Demonstrates initiative, adaptability, and dependability; Assists new employees or team members in meeting their educational and technical needs through instruction, demonstration, and feedback; Communicates respectfully and effectively; Uses time efficiently.

Education, Training and Experience

Minimum Qualifications/License/Certification

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in athletic training from an accredited program.
  • Certification through the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers.
  • Active professional license in good standing in the state of Indiana.
  • Current BLS certification is required
  • Experience working with tactical populations (law enforcement, fire, military, EMS).
  • Experience in occupational health, industrial rehabilitation, or sports medicine clinics.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with job task analysis for public safety roles.
  • Basic understanding of the command structure of law enforcement, fire and rescue, and understanding of how to establish effective lines of communication for public safety personnel.
  • Basic understanding of the worker’s compensation system, third party administrator (payor) and the relationship of both with agency risk management.
  • Certification in Strength and Conditioning, Corrective Exercise, Performance Enhancement, Functional Movement or any similar certifications from reputable professional certifying organizations are preferred but not required. The role requires completion of an approved certification within 2 years.
  • The candidate must have the ability to communicate and interact positively with a wide variety of people from different members of the team.
  • Must be proficient with the English language, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to document the EMR appropriately using generally acceptable medical and professional terminology.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
